Cancer

I am in Portland OR. I fly home on the weekend. Then, I come back to the US on July 2. In the middle, I mind the kids while my wife flies to her fathers 60th. So, I am home for a while from July 19. My sister emailed today to say my mother has cancer in her lymph nodes. My mother being a drama queen, no-one knows how bad it is, but it sure seems bad enough that I should be visiting, instead of being on the other side of the earth. Things always go wrong when I am away.

Hey Christian, my best wishes for your mom. My mom had lymphoma but she beat it. It's been about 15 years since she was first diagnosed, but although her white cell count is very low, she keeps chugging along - at 80 years young. She's active in the Pittsburgh art scene, and keeps cranking out masterpieces. OK - shameless plug, you can see her works at gghersch.com. Keep your hopes up, and your prayers coming.

That sounds like Hodgkins Lymphoma. It could go either way so don't take the drama queen stuff lightly. Lymph node cancer can be very serious.

My mother beat the cancer but it took my Uncle this last weekend. Good luck.

I'm obviously not educated/procatice in medicine, but my wife is...Lymph Node cancer is/can be very bad (not that any cancer is good, but some are worse are far as treating and this is one)...we lost a friend to that same cancer years ago. Let's hope they caught it early enough to take care of it.

That's got to be hard, I hope your flight home is better then some of your others, and you get to see your mom soon. I wish you and your family all the best from a bad situation.

Welcome! Too bad you just missed the Rose Festival or the good parts anyway. At least you may get a couple of really nice days to look around.

From her doctor, find out what stage the lymphoma is in. I believe up to Stage II, it is eminently curable. I had a colleague whose wife was diagnosed with lymphoma; she had the lymph nodes excised, went on 18 months of chemo and was all right after that. That was 30 years ago. Medicine has advanced since then so cure rates ought to be even higher. Best of luck to your mom.

... for unknown reasons I've been unable to post to CodeProject in the last several days ... hence such a late reply ... Hi Christian, Sorry to hear this disturbing news. I am a cancer survivor myself (lower tongue cancer treated successfully with chemo and radiation). So many different conditions are described by the word "cancer" that I suggest the first thing you need is more information. Even within the category of "lymph system" cancers there are myriad variations of types with differing prognoses, treatment regimens, etc. A very good resource is the usenet forum : alt.support.cancer which you can access also through Google Groups : http://groups.google.com/group/alt.support.cancer/topics? Like any unmoderated usenet forum you will see the usual spammers and trolls when you access using Google, but here are few of the, imho, most helpful posters : J (a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge about cancer and perhaps the most active member of the group) Steph (a Canadian ... British Columbia ... Oncologist) There are many excellent web sites providing summaries of cancer types, treatment modalities, etc. written for the non-medical lay-person. Among the best of these are those provided by the M.D. Anderson cancer center : http://www.mdanderson.org/ the British Columbia Cancer Agency : http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/PPI/TypesofCancer/Lymphomas.htm ACOR (Association of Cancer On-Line Resources) offers a wealth of resources, and maintains list-serv driven mailing lists specific to many types of cancers that you can subscribe to. Their forums are moderated and will include many health care professionals. http://www.acor.org/ PM me for more links if you wish. If you can post a brief description of your mother's diagnosis to alt.support.cancer or the relevant ACOR group, I predict you will get very helpful responses, and perhaps some specific information on Australian resources. At the point where you have some sense of the prognosis of your mother's condition, you may find it helpful to read a remarkable article, by one of my intellectual and scientifically literary "heroes," Stephen Jay Gould, where he discusses the statistics of mortality in relation to cancer and other diseases : http://cancerguide.org/median\_not\_msg.html For me, and for other people I have known, trying to come to grips with what the statistics for our type of cancer meant on a practical level, this article has been a wonderful "antidote" to "assuming the worst." take care, Bill
