Good free DVD ripper?

I have a DVD camcorder and it comes with some software to transfer it to the harddisk as an MPG file (Pinnacle Studio). But the harddisk version is of lower quality than when I play the DVD directly. So it seems there's a good bit of quality loss. Can anyone suggest a free software I can use to rip the DVD directly into my harddisk without losing quality?

Thank you. Downlaoded and ripped the DVD. Now need to figure out how to edit the vob files. I have to cut out snips and mail it to my family :-)

Another one is DVDShrink[^]. When I was experimenting with both I preferred DVD Shrink over DVDDecrypter.

Yeah, I just found it more capable and intuitive to use. I just wish there was a free way of using DVD Shrink to rip straight to DivX. It's always a bit hit or miss whether I manage to select the right audio track if I've ripped all of them off the DVD.

I use DVD Decrypter, as you can import the dvd vob files straight into pinnacle 12 or Movie Magix Pro 11 after you have decrypted them, and you dont loose any quality, also rips the menus. very nice

I used to use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter until I found www.dvdfab.com They have a free version and the pay version has all the bells and whistles. -jj

What I'd like to know is which of these can be contolled via Automation. I'd love to run it from another program, telling it what to rip, what to call a file, etc. I'd like to rip data DVDs, not video.

Try capturing your video to AVI when using Pinnacle. AVI are very large files and will require lots of space on your hard drive.

Sounds like you may need a little more than just a DVD Ripper. Try www.doom9.org or www.videohelp.com Both have a lot of good information and tools for working with multimedia. BTW, Pinnacle studio should have a tool for editing video... RTS
