Basically it comes down to 2, the rest are all disqualified due to over complex install instructions, bad/wrong (installation) support, no support for VS2008 (yes, some still live back in 2005), or simply I gave up trying to run it. 1. mojoPortal[^] - OSS, runs on Mono. Multi-portal support, tons of skins, very good docs. 2. TandemServer 2008[^] - free, but slightly limited, no multi-portal support, seems solid. For a good CMS resource, try http://www.cmsmatrix.org/[^].

DNN is not bad, it's only that build time that puts me off! And the fact that everything seems to have been commercialized around it. I just wonder how the maintainers go about extending it and fixing bugs/testing/etc...

I agree with both of these comments. building the core is very painful, and with the whole marketplace thing they have going on, it does seem to have taken a turn for the worse. Regarding the building, are you planning on making changes to the CMS itself, or add functionality to it in the form of a module? My personal experience has been to create new modules outside of the dnn sln just so i don't have to sit through the build of the core. take my comments in stride though. I spent 6 months building a product based on DNN and am now starting over (bit of a direction change too) going the route of rails and mySQL.

For "most" people they never have to build the core so that would be a none issue. I have added web services to the core before, so I do not know, but if you ask some of the core developers they could probably show you a way that you do not have to compile it all the time.

mogoPortal is not bad. Does it allow multiple container skins on a page/site? From what I could see, it only allows for one skin them for the entire site and only one type of container for modules. Surely there is a setting in the demo I am not noticing..
