My VS 2008 crashes every day. It is actually not a big deal because it has the decency to do so in the middle of the night (I leave my system on). I have learned to save everything often. All in all though I do like the product and I really like Linq.

I can't really think of anything that could take all night to compile. Even in college, we were to compile Linux kernels in our Operating Systems course, and with slow machines that didn't take all that long.

What third-party code do you use that runs in the VS process? My copy of VS2005 was crashing a lot last week. It turned out to be the Vault client plug-in struggling as the upgraded Windows Search engine was indexing my source files!

It is actually sitting there doing nothing special. I close all of my projects and sometimes just forget to close VS 2008. It really is not a big deal and I have never lost any data. The problem may very well be elsewhere. I appreciate all of the input though.

I never get 2008 crashes. Even on Vista on my meagre 1.25GB, 1.6MHz laptop. Have you burnt enough virgins?

Our web app comprises 12k files, not total size, but file count, and even in 2005 only takes about thirty seconds to build.

Our web app comprises 12k files, not total size, but file count, and even in 2005 only takes about thirty seconds to build.
A current project I am putting together has 5 different projects in one solution, with about 6,000-10,000 lines in each project, and VS2008 doesn't take more than 1 minute for a full release build. I am using a machine that is nowhere close to cutting edge, with Vista Ultimate :-\

I think we're down to about six or seven minutes for the core executable and DLLs. The 70 or so plug-in DLLs representing various products take a bit longer - i believe when a full build is necessary it's fired off at the end of the day so as to be ready by morning. If we added it all up, threw in the various performance and pricing engines, tests, etc. then it still probably wouldn't take all night... but the eastern horizon might be looking a bit light.

I remember a product I worked on a few years ago, that is what we did. Run a script about 8:00pm, when done in the morning, copied over to QA in a simple little .bat file.

Why would you shut a program like VS08 down just because it's dark? :-\ Actually, i'll often leave instances open for days at a time if i'm working on something. Removes the need to start it back up again the next day... and gives me a chance to experience all those wonderful resource leaks.

I never thought to try the "Virgin" solution. I am fairly certain that the problem is within my environment. I wasn't complaining though because all-in-all I do like the MS tool set. I am still on XP Pro. What are your thoughts about upgrading to Vista?
