China Cheated

It seems that two of the three Chinese female gymnasts are not old enough to legally compete in the 2008 games, but China doctored the evidence and nobody wants to piss off the host country by calling them out on it. Personally, I think the minimum age for all competitors should be 18 by June 30 of the Olympic year (for Winder Olympics, the minimum age month would be January 31 of the Olympic year.

There's no way the smallest girl is 16 or even a teen for that matter. I think the NY Times had uncovered before that some of them were 14 or younger. I'll try and find the article.

You mean, the olympics has been a joke for a very long time. Ever since they started allowing the athletes to wear clothes.

I see no need for a minimum.
I can imagine that this may be bad if maybe the child is being forced to compete, rather then wanting to compete... Also, so much pressure at such a low age can be bad, very bad.... But then again if the child is talented, and wants to, then why not? :~ Hmmm...

If they're good enough to take on the best in the world, give them a shot. I understand how gymnastics could be an exception as the increased flexibility you have when you're younger could be advantageous.

Actually while watching last night, they did mention that the Chinese gymnasts are hand picked at age 3.

because the exercise level needed to compete at the professional level will cause permanent injury and disability to the immature human body. It's not limited to any one sport, the same reason that little league limits the maximum number of pitches/day a player can throw based on age. I know there're others but I saw the LL one mentioned recently.

It's the principle of the thing. The rules are in place, and since the China won the gold, every effort should be made to ensure they did it legally. The US and Korea(?) teams should also be verified as being legal, but it's kinda obvious to anyone with any observational skills that the US team members are all 16 or older. They are massive in physical appearance to their sub-teen Chinese counterparts.

In principle I agree with you, but that is not what happens out there.

what rules? nowadays rules only apply to the receiving end. I was listening to the radio about olympic doping. An official was saying they expect to catch between 20-30 athletes :omg: :wtf: So, the athletes and their respective country don't know about this? Sport has long lost its value and it turned to Sport = Business. I have no problem making business of sports, but first and foremost the spirit of sport needs to be there.

There is no shame in losing, but there is great shame in needing to cheat to win.

I am wondering why should is there an age restriction in the first place? I was not aware of it until I read your post.

Sure, but are they going to feel that way? I doubt it.
