It seems that two of the three Chinese female gymnasts are not old enough to legally compete in the 2008 games, but China doctored the evidence and nobody wants to piss off the host country by calling them out on it. Personally, I think the minimum age for all competitors should be 18 by June 30 of the Olympic year (for Winder Olympics, the minimum age month would be January 31 of the Olympic year.

I can imagine that this may be bad if maybe the child is being forced to compete, rather then wanting to compete... Also, so much pressure at such a low age can be bad, very bad.... But then again if the child is talented, and wants to, then why not? :~ Hmmm...

because the exercise level needed to compete at the professional level will cause permanent injury and disability to the immature human body. It's not limited to any one sport, the same reason that little league limits the maximum number of pitches/day a player can throw based on age. I know there're others but I saw the LL one mentioned recently.

It's the principle of the thing. The rules are in place, and since the China won the gold, every effort should be made to ensure they did it legally. The US and Korea(?) teams should also be verified as being legal, but it's kinda obvious to anyone with any observational skills that the US team members are all 16 or older. They are massive in physical appearance to their sub-teen Chinese counterparts.

An official was saying they expect to catch between 20-30 athletes :omg: :wtf: So, the athletes and their respective country don't know about this? Sport has long lost its value and it turned to Sport = Business. I have no problem making business of sports, but first and foremost the spirit of sport needs to be there.

Anyone who saw them can conclude easily that these Girls were not 16. I am wondering why should is there an age restriction in the first place? I was not aware of it until I read your post.

They might be under the official minimum age, but I think the real problem with Olympic gymnastics (maybe gymnastics, in general?) is that judging favors small, girl-like bodies and fast, jumpy movements. For decades, women's gymnastics has really been all about girl's gymnastics -- the gymnasts with larger, more muscular bodies don't do as well as the 16 - 20 year olds that look like they're 12 (the Belarussian Swan, Svetlana Boginskaya[^], is a notable exception). I think it's a major problem that harms the young gymnasts, since they must remain unnaturally small to keep winning, and it explains why China (or any other country) might try to skirt the rules. -Justin

what rules? nowadays rules only apply to the receiving end. I was listening to the radio about olympic doping. An official was saying they expect to catch between 20-30 athletes :omg: :wtf: So, the athletes and their respective country don't know about this? Sport has long lost its value and it turned to Sport = Business. I have no problem making business of sports, but first and foremost the spirit of sport needs to be there.

more likely some think they're clever enough to get away with it, but won't.
