Apple's whole approach is IMO insane, although I suspect the rationale is to keep the thing virus free, which I would say DOES make a lot of sense. The NDA is something else again, I am thinking more of the nightmares around deployment etc when I say that. Apple dev is interesting, the tools don't help you as much, the language is not as pretty, the end result does feel like real programming tho.

It doesn't really make a lot (or any) sense. They are using security by obscurity. That is insane!

Like I said, I was more thinking of deployment. To deploy an Apple app, you need to do it through the app store, and you need to buy a license that allows you to build apps for their store. There's no other viable deployment method I can see for companies wanting to sell their apps to people outside their organisation. Part of this is probably just money ( they get a percentage on all sales ), but part of it is also that the tight control means they can stop an app from working, from being available, etc. The NDA thing is b/c some of it is prerelease, I think, although everything I am using, works with my phone. It may be that they want to release a book or two before anyone else is allowed to talk about it.

It sounds so typically Apple. They make a great product, and then turn around and screw the very people (e.g. developers) who could help send it through the roof. Dumb.

The NDA will be lifted as soon as the 2.1 version is released.

As some of you may know, I've been coding for the iPhone. The iPhone SDK is under NDA right now, and the apple docs are as good as the MS docs, which means a lot of things that should be easy, are a nightmare. It seems to me that there's a real opening for a site like CP that has iPhone and Cocoa articles and forums. How many of you guys write for Apple and think that's a good idea ? For the record, the two possibilities I am exploring here are 1 - such a site exists and I didn't know about it, or 2 - Chris should add an Apple next to SQL/Java/*nix on the CP toolbar. Fact is, I've been kicked out of the MS MVP program , the MS centric forums tend to be depressing with repetitive questions at the most basic level and one votes for helpful answers, I'm feeling disillusioned about contributing to helping people use Microsoft products, but I still love being part of CP, it would make me very happy if I could write articles on the iPhone and have them appear here.

What's to prevent a company from putting an iPhone app on its website and selling it from there? Or are you saying that the only way to upload an app to an iPhone is via the store? If so, my first article will be How to bypass the iPhone Store and sell your app.

In fact, a jailbroken phone will accept any app. otherwise, it needs to come via the store, or have a special provisioning file created, a license from Apple to write apps lets you provision for 100 phones, but it's a slow back and forth process. Trouble is, the only solution is to jailbreak the phone and not everyone wants to do that.

I don't know. The official story was that I was working for CP so my CP contributions didn't count anymore. But, Nish worked for CP for years, and I worked for at least a year and kept my MVP. The next iteration, quite a few MVPs nominated me and I was not awarded, but new MVPs who post answers a lot less than me, were. My two theories are that someone noticed that I encourage people to think instead of doing their work for them, and they don't like that, or I am out for not liking Vista and saying so publically. I wasn't kicked out, out of the blue. The program does not allow for that. You're re-awarded every year, there are four award dates in a year, and I was removed and not reawarded.

Ah. Sorry to hear that. I suspect my MVP award will be at risk (Jan) because I've hardly contributed to CP this year, given all the stuff going on in my life. Well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :) Marc

My bets on this one... Microsoft have done a hell of a lot to try and get a good reputation for Vista (no matter how much they tried, they still failed)

I would definately read intro articles on iPhone development but I wouldn't be doing any actual development. I did some apple / cocoa development stuff at my previous job. Do they have an emulator for the iPhone?

Yeah, it's really good too. It even runs apps that won't run on the phone, to my chagrin.

What about a mobile.codeproject.com? All things mobile including iPhone, Android (if they ever update the bloody APIs etc etc)

                                          cheers, Chris Maunder
