My friend and I were arrested for stealing a car in Zimbabwe on new years eve of 1997. My dad and my cousin had to drive 6 hours to come rescue us from a town the size of my company (i.e. tiny) but which had a jail bigger than the empire state! The thing was that it was my dads car and they did not believe us, he had lent it to me so that I could drive to Kariba (the town) and join some other friends for a new years bash. Apparently a lot of white kids steal cars in South Africa and drive them up through Africa to be sold or exported wherever. So we were prime suspects in Zimbabwe. Ironic that here in SA (and other parts of the world) two black guys in a nice car are prime suspects  We spent a few hours being shown around the prison, them showing us the exact cells they were going to throw us into. Most were filled with huge hulking black guys who are not too friendly towards whites. Eventually they impounded the car and kicked us out of the jail onto the side of the road to wait for my dad. They did not even take our names, I reckon they were all dead bored and wanted to have some fun with us white kids lol. It was definitley an experience :-D regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa

How many CP'ers have ever been arrested and spent time in jail? About 6 or 7 months ago I was arrested on "suspicion" of being an illegal immigrant here in South Africa. I was in a taxi that got pulled over and as the officer was checking the drivers licenses, he kept complaining (to me) about how hot it was. Only problem is he was speaking in a language called Sotho, which I don't understand. I mentioned that I didn't speak Sotho and blam! Right into the back of a police van. Of course I didn't have my passport with me but my flat was only 5 minutes away. I told the cops that but they preferred to drive 45 minutes back to the jail house instead. My HR manager came a few hours later with my passport and permits, problem was, she also came screaming at the top cop and he didn't take too kindly to that so he chased her away and I ended up spending a whole day and a half in jail. Not a pleasant experience. By the way, if you're Albanian or Serbian or "Former Yugoslavian", or just look anywhere near white enough, and you'e having problems illegally entering the UK or Spain or wherever, do feel free to illegally come to South Africa!! There seems to be an unwritten law that the cops here follow...it goes like this. Only black people come into South Africa illegally  ASP.NET can never fail as working with it is like fitting bras to supermodels - it's one pleasure after the next - David Wulff

My point was that I was thrown into the van when the cop realised that I was unable to understand Sotho. My argument is that if I was white, and say, French...he would have simply smiled and said "Zinedine Zidane is my favorite football player!!" Hmm, that's funny but it's pretty interesting at the same time. Over here, every single one of my friends has been to prison for some nonsense or other. Like a fight with a girlfriend or wife, or breaking some old regime law or unpaid speeding fines. So it never is a big deal to announce that you've been in. Guess it's not the same out in the West :-) Incidentally, as I was thrown in jail for no good reason at all, I have no criminal record, hell, no record of arrest even! It was realxed most of the time but when you are responsible for keeping terrorists locked up there is always an edge. And the prison officers there were nice guys as a rule. I spent 14 days (and 13 nights) in a grotty dank cell on the site of Exeter Crown Court after I called the judge cautioning me and some mates for a hit and run on Dixons in Exeter highstreet an "overpaid, overweight, stuck up, upper class wanker in a wig". Not the best days of my life let me tell you.

Still, we could dress the story up a bit (actually there is a little more ... like the GORGEOUS lesbian that was staying at the hotel who kept trying to get my ex to stay with her for the night to get away from "that nasty queer (Al) and his young bitch (me)"!!! About 9 - 10 years ago I was a DJ in a bar in Medellin, Colombia. All the sudden cops storm the place. Without explanation they put us all in a truck and strait to jail we go. I was with a cousin and my brother. They take us to the DAS building (something like the FBI, but nasty like the Gestapo or the KGB). Needless to say we're worried and scared, we didn't know what was going on. The take our IDs and put like 30 of us in a small cell. Eventually, like at 1:00am everybody falls asleep, that is everybody but me, because there was no space in the cell floor available, unless I wanted to sleep on top of the nasty looking bastard that was caught with a stolen car and a illegal weapon. :omg: I spent all night swiping roaches off of my brother and my cousin. Next morning a cop comes in and sees that I'm the only one awake and gives me a broom and make me clean the whole patio outside the cell. I did what any brave man would do... I took the broom and did what I was told! X| Well, after 3 - 4 hours the decided to let us go, at least all of those that were in the bar. What happened was that the was a bomb that killed a bunch of cops (the was the time of the drug cartel wars) and the were hungry for blood (literally!) But found out that we were just innocent kids. We also figured out that several hitmen used to go to the bar (we didn't know that!:omg: ) so that's why the cops went there. Next weekend... there I was... same bar... waiting for those cops... they never came back. (Young kids can be soooo stupid!)

All of my opinions are correct, even when reality makes the mistake of disagreeing with me.

  Unfortunately, Al and myself were the only prisoners that night! Still, we could dress the story up a bit (actually there is a little more ... like the GORGEOUS lesbian that was staying at the hotel who kept trying to get my ex to stay with her for the night to get away from "that nasty queer (Al) and his young bitch (me)"!!! Man, it feels like yesterday - hard to believe that was 10 years ago now... Al has retired to his condo in Florida now (he worked for the New York Post most of his life) so perhaps my wife and I should pay him a visit (10 years on, etc.).

I love it! OK, this is bordering on enough to run with as a story for really good comedy. I suggest we all try our hand at writing a screen-play for it. Perhaps CP should offer a prize and you should of course be the judge :) "The folly of man is that he dreams of what he can never achieve rather than dream of what he can."

Damn good idea! Perhaps I should also re-post this story later on, as many US CP-ians may miss it, what with all the VB vs C++ and Dreamweaver threads! Another titbit: Prior to losing it completely, my ex ended up singing a drunken version of "Bobbys Girl" (by Marcie Blaine I think) on the Karaoke stage - totally out of tune. It made me wince (not to mention the poor locals!) - it was so bad that I just knew I was in for a long night!! Can I choose the actors too? :)

1967. I was driving from LA to New Orleans to do a 3 weekend gig at a club. I had long hair, was driving a 65 Corvette, had a bunch of stuff in the car like instruments, clothes, etc.. and about 600.00 cash in my pockets. The rest of the band had gone on ahead of me and i was travelling by myself. Its about 2:00 AM on a Saturday morning and I was driving in the desert like area coming into Pecos, Texas. Doing about 70 MPH ( the speed limit ) when a cop car pulled up behind me. So I slowed to around 50 and kept on going. They waited till I was in downdown Pecos and pulled me over. Suspicion of drug possession. Put me in jail. No Judge or JP available till Monday morning at 9:00 AM. So I stayed in that rat hole all day Sat. and Sun. Monday morning at 6:00 AM they let me go. No explanation or anything. They had removed the frot seats from my car and didn't even put them back. Had to get a garage to come out and put them in. Got the hell out of Pecos and have never been back. Know the feeling. Don't forget that a quarter of those he signed death warrants for were found completely innocent later. How many innocents weren't that lucky ? X| Elaine :rose: Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
