I.e. After the PhD they weren't smart enough to get tenure, and a PhD in *insert interesting yet obscure subject* outside of academia qualifies one for menial office work. Yet in their view, of course, because they've got the advanced degree they should be managing the place. Met the type. Instead of shining their intellect, they create a permanent grudge which holds them back and creates a vicious cycle.

In the UK they want lots of people with degrees so the easy course (e.g. media studies) are popular. Great for a job in a burger bar and we still need to import engineers.

I beg to differ. I think there are people under paid, as much as there are people over paid. And there people who think they are while they are not. Also, and it might be frustrating for some, intelligence and (valid qualification) are not the best skill for the more money. Qualification do help, but in the right area, as well as (and maybe much more) marketing oneself agressively and in the right (juicy) area...

I beg to differ. I think there are people under paid, as much as there are people over paid. And there people who think they are while they are not. Also, and it might be frustrating for some, intelligence and (valid qualification) are not the best skill for the more money. Qualification do help, but in the right area, as well as (and maybe much more) marketing oneself agressively and in the right (juicy) area...

I completely agree with that. Marketing oneself is the key to getting what you want. From what I can tell, people who do not market/promote themselves are told what to do, while the self-promoters get to choose what they want to do (by promoting themselves as such!). It's no coincidence that a guy named Josh Smith with an active blog named "Josh Smith on WPF", and dozens of WPF articles published under the name Josh Smith, has a job developing WPF software from the comfort of his living room! :-D

I completely agree with that. Marketing oneself is the key to getting what you want. From what I can tell, people who do not market/promote themselves are told what to do, while the self-promoters get to choose what they want to do (by promoting themselves as such!). According to the latest news (Scientific American, New Scientist, Yahoo news, my own opinion :D ) intelligence has been overrated (and it's harmful to children education!). Hard work, that's the key! I guess Josh Smith is once more on the right track!

I think this[^] accurately summarizes the angst that so many of the highly educated people in the workforce feel. I know quite a few people in that position: impressive degrees from top-notch schools, accompanied by huge student loans and a low-paying job that utilizes their real-world knowledge and expertise (i.e. they can type). I got out of the structured education system after getting a Bachelor's degree and never looked back. I have nothing against higher education, but I think many people these days use it as a way to avoid getting a job. Talk about doing something smart for a stupid reason!

As I was wondering about posting or not my 1st article to CodePoject I posted a preview link to my blog in the Lounge: http://www.galador.net/codeblog/[^] As it’s about WPF Marc (Clifton) had a few comments: - it’s interesting :-D - maybe you should ask Josh if you really need to do what you did in this project? So could you give some feedback? Basically I’m trying to replace zillion of IValueConverter class with a single ScriptConverter. What do you think of my post?
