very much so.... I think that the intelligence of a group is equal to the lowest IQ minus the number of people in the group. :-D you quickly see how large groups can quickly degrade to animal behavior.

fear of the unknown will always drive people to be irrational around that which they cannot understand. I am sure eventually we will screw ourselves, but not tomorrow. :-D

And if we don't screw ourselves the sun eventually will - unless we've moved elsewhere by that time. :)

Oh I am sure we'll find a way to screw it up ahead of schedule, if we live that long. :) I'm rather optimistic about man's ability to destroy. :) in that aspect we are one talented bunch! :-D

Yeah, but what about their feelings?

You've got these subatomic particles accelerated at great speeds for the sole purpose of being destroyed. No one thinks of the ethical implications of this, There's a limited supply of hadrons in the universe. Do we just want to go around destroying them? What if we run out? What if the hadrons can feel pain? Will we look back at this hundreds of years from now and regret it? Kinda like we do with the killing of bacteria with antibiotics now.

I've heard enough from the people who want the LHC experiment to be stopped because they think it will cause the world (or even the universe) to end. Having said that, if we do manage to screw ourselves out of existence, here's to you guys! :-D I would have liked to meet more of you, but I'm sure I will. ;)

No, you're underestimating it. Your formula would have a large committee if geniuses still have genius level intelligence, which is obviously incorrect. The correct formula is [Min(All Members IQs)]/[Number of Members].

I don't mean to be a Grammar Nazi, but shouldn't it be "If I were falling off the edge...", rather than "If I was falling off the edge..."? I remember being taught in school that the former is right ("If the war were over tomorrow...*"). Just want to know if I'm right or wrong (or just sanctimonious :-D ). * Let's see who gets the reference right! :-D

I like this argument: "were" is a subjunctive form used in contrafactual constructions, whereas "was" is an indictive form used in situations involving propositions with unconfirmed facts.

This LHC experiment is like running unsafe code. Why couldn't they practice process isolation and bring this LHC somewhere physically disconnected from the Earth? That is assuming those worried people are actually right…
So the creationist says: Everything must have a designer. God designed everything. I say: Why is God the only exception? Why not make the "designs" (like man) exceptions and make God a creation of man?

The subjunctive form "were" is strictly correct, but its use (especially in informal speech) is disappearing. Language changes like that over time.

Because it costs ~$10k/pound to move stuff into orbit. If you could come up with a budget of several hundred trillion dollars...
