Dubai Vertical City[^] Is this a hoax? I can't find these exact same images on any official website. 2.4 Km's high 400 Stories Its planning is being tackled like that of a city rather than that of a building. It's not the Burj Dubai, this one is 3-4 times higher!

I like the "Vertical Bullet Train" concept.  In this country a lift wouldn't be able to work like a bullet train because there has to be some mechanical fail-safe to stop it if the cables (or magnets in this case) fail.  By introducing this mechanical linkage you negate the use for a "bullet" train.

Other expensive projects in Dubai were land-level, thus much safer, though expensive. The sway would be horrendous. You would need lots of elevators. Cables stretch, so you would have to change elevators every 40 floors or so. Someone pointed out air problems at that altitude. Someone will want to buy one, and someone will want to burn it. I remember a sci-fi story about a space elevator built on a mountain, using an orbiting rock as anchor. People and stuff could be moved without rockets. Nice idea except nutcases live on Earth. I think it's just a pipe dream. A Tower of Babel. Designers come up with concepts all the time, knowing they are impossible with current technology.

The mountain part is idiotic. You're only saving a few miles on a cable that's between 22 and 44k miles long. It makes much more sense to locate it in the ocean to load cargo ships directly. All we need is a relatively cheap material with one or two orders of magnitude more tensile strength than steel. Carbon nanotubes meet the second requirement.

The way I recall (about the SF novel, see post above), it was not built on a mountain to reduce the distance, it was because there are only a few points where the geosynchronous orbit is really stable, and the mountain happened to be in that place. The ocean is a good idea though. Red Mars[^] also featured one, but on mars. And it was blown up...

That's it, thanks. :-D Maybe you remember another one about a man who runs a company that accidentally discovers a way to make small black holes. They turn it into transportation devices. Vehicles that can go very fast with no rockets, etc. by creating a series of BH in front of the object, sucking it forward. Naturally some people want to stop this  probably due to financial reasons. I believe the man was of Native American descent, also there were several attempts on his life.

That's BS. :) Red Mars was my introduction to the concept as well. Green Mars had one as well, it wasn't blow up during the 2nd revolution. At some point in the series the technology improved to the point they had a bunch on the Earth as well. It's been at least 4 years since I read those books though and I'm not sure when that happened.
