That's a good idea - I'll try it after work tonight. Another possibility that I may try is to reinstall everything on the C: drive. It's not as common a problem as it used to be, but there are still some products that have trouble when not installed in the default location.

The opening link is: ms-help://MS.VSCC.v90/MS.MSDNQTR.v90.en/dv_vstoc/html/06ddebea-2c83-4a45-bb48-6264c797ed93.htm I have no idea how to trace it. All I get is a File Not Found, or Action Cancelled message, and nothing helpful for debugging.

If not, maybe check your installation options? Some MS installers have that "do not install to disk" option which can lead to those annoying "please insert CD" infinite loops.

That's the exact URL I have displayed, but all I get is: "The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. " etc... I did find entries in the registry for another version of MSDN, but there is no entry in the installed programs list. So I deleted the keys, located the left behind files, and moved them elsewhere. I'm practically certain that it's an interaction between MSDN and the WIn2K3 Server or its Small Business Server addon. What I can't figure out is what that might be. There are absolutely no error messages or failures in any of the logs, or the event viewer. According to WIndows, the install went perfectly. :sigh:

Yeah, but Visual Studio is practically an Operating System unto itself. Anyway, it's just a thought...trying to suggest things you might not have thought of...
I do occasionally have a message blocking ActiveX, but there's no setting I can find in IE to turn it off. Maybe I can try to add "ms-help://*" to the Trusted Sites zone?

I've just noticed that you're running on Windows 2003. Do you by any chance have that feature which blocks all but trusted sites through IE? Protected mode or something? Although I'd expect that to pop up a message relating to that topic. I'll fire up a VM and see if I can install my copy of VS2008 onto it.
That is a very good point. I know Win 2003 has a lot of things locked down in IE!

I just tried installing VS2008 + MSDN Help (Professional edition) onto a vanilla copy of Win2003 and the help worked fine. Via contents, haven't tried context sensitive help though. Didn't disable anything so ...
Boy, that is strange. You must have your main development machine hosed somewhere. Did you ever run a locked tool (like one Microsoft supplied quite a while back) or anything like that? Maybe it is hosed from all the prior attempts. At least now you know it is your current configuration and not Windows nor VS 2008 :) Edit: Opps.. Was talking to the wrong person.. Oh well, now he knows it works on a standard WIn 2003 without any changes :-O

I've been thinking about your reply for the last couple of hours and wondering what on earth you were on about...
My inital thought was that I was replying to Roger Wright who had the problem and that it was he that had tested wtih a VM. After I posted the message I noticed it was you who instead, so most of the message did not apply to you :)
