 I doubt the US Forest Service would allow me to use a blowtorch to get rid of the old paint. The fire danger sign at the ranger station around the corner from here is still "High"... :sigh:

Not sure, but it couldn't be really any different than the people who flick their burning cigarette butts out of their cars into the dry brush. Couple that up with 50-90mph Santa Ana winds that blow at this time of year, we could be in trouble. Cal-Fire is supposedly going to let the Australians borrow the DC-10 Supertanker for their fire season coming up. Here is a clip[^] of it making a drop in the Zaca fire.

That's really nice of them, but wtf will they do if there's a fire in your neighborhood? huff and puff and blow the thing out? Screw the Aussies.

Big spiders are no problem, it's the small fast ones you have to watch out for.

Exactly. My wife said she was not worried about it since our fire season is pretty much over. Well, not worried about it until I reminded her of the fire incident we had in January '06. Luckily the wind blew it straight into an area that was hit two years before, and a storm rolled in three days after it started. The lady that works with my wife, her husband is a mechanic for the plane and said something about the Aussies being charged $50K per day using the plane. Supposedly Arnold Schwarzenegger has been trying to get a 747 retrofitted for fire fighting. Hell with that, how about a C-130 or C-5 the Air Force would be willing to donate

Yep. We have plenty of black widows around here. My wife and kids freak out over the wolf spiders[^]. It's funny watching our three cats bat these guys around

Great and what happens if they break it? Would they come up with the money to buy a new one (Do you really think a government Carson is happy with would provide new equipment for the US? They'd claim it was "used" and offer $0.10 on the $1.00) And even if they did, the delivery time would leave you unprotected for at least a year.

That is precisely why I wasn't too thrilled about hearing about the notion of the plane going down there.

I've typed four different remarks responding to that line - I think I'll display the better part of valor and move on. . .

Why should we send our trained fire fighters to risk their lives fighting fires in the States? Why would you even need us to? If you had half a clue what you're talking about you'd know that we source all sorts of fire fighting equipment from many places around the world for our summer fire season as so many countries including the US. Personally I like Elvis, I'm pretty sure he's owned by the Canadians

Do you send them, or do they sign on for the pay during a period of time when they might be laid off? I am not being snarky, I am asking because I don't know. Generally speaking, I suppose you do it because we do it. Tit for Tat is often a good deal. However, I'm guessing that Oz has gotten so used to renting big water movers that it hasn't anticipated the possibility that California and Canada might say "no."

I think you'll find they get paid the same no matter where they work. Im sure they receive a travel allowance but I doubt its personally profitable for them. It's no how much they make - they should be paid a lot more than they are, I'm sure - but who foots the bill.

People who deal with me straightforwardly and with respect, can pretty much count on the same from me - but you and Carson and Ka and a couple of others who consistently insult and denigrate the US and attack anyone who suggests that it's a force for good in the world, often find themselves shown up for what they are. If you're interested in continuing you can start with these Why should we send our trained fire fighters to risk their lives fighting fires in the States? Why would you even need us to? Would the US be so silly as to lend us the aircraft without a contract that details how any costs associated with damage, wear, maintenance etc would be handled?

Actually, I think that I'm pretty good about admitting that I didn't have all the facts when I'm shown to be talking out of my ass. Not perfect of course. Of course some folks - you can judge for yourself how often you fit in this category- confuses their personal opinions and objective facts. Now on to the questions you claim I never answered:

I'll repeat what I said before: "Generally speaking, I suppose you do it because we do it."

And I repeat what I said in my last post: "Tit for Tat is often a good deal."

Contracts are wonderful things, and sometimes they are enforceable. A sad fact, but true. However, if you hadn't been so eager to turn a discussion about a rented airplane into a personal attack on me, you might have noticed that I allowed for the possibility that Oz would reimburse California if the plane was destroyed and I said, "Would they come up with the money to buy a new one. . .And even if they did, the delivery time would leave you unprotected for at least a year." I trust that you see now that I had already answered your questions - some of them before you asked. Do you have any more?
