I agree with all the sentiments except the last. I read it in English of my own free will (and liking, I may add), which soldier should I thank?

I'd suggest the 1st Gurkha Rifles. But be very polite. The Gurkhas are some of the best soldiers in the world.

I've known of the Gurkhas and their legendary prowess for many many years. But, yes, I checked with Wikipedia to get the name of a specific regiment.

Please don't forget about tanks, airplanes, bombs, mines, torpedoes, missiles, nukes, etc., which are also part of the war machine. After all, it wasn't soldiers that kept the Soviets at bay.

So what? Why should I prefer to write in English? I am English but I dont live there. Why should I feel any special attatchment to English, which is just a Germanic language anyway. As for telling me what to write can you provide any proof that Germany prior to the second world war was in any way more restrictive than Britain at the same time?

US soldiers saved our a**es in wwii, both true for French and Brits. Had they not been there, the Brits would not have lasted much longer against the Germans.

Prior to the normandy landings the British had: 1) Won the air war in western Europe. 2) Won the war in the atlantic. 3) Won the war in North Africa against both Italy and Germany. 4) Had the Japanese in retreat, pushing them out of Burma. Yes the US shortened the war, and finished the Japanese off. Their main contribution prior to this was in materials and goods, without which Britain would have found it hard to continue. There is one overloked factor in Europe, the Russians. They probablty did more to drain Germany to the point where it was close to collapse. The US came in most likely because they didnt want Russia to win the war and thus take the whole of Europe.

Tune in (if you can) to BBC4tv tonight. 8.10pm "The Great War - An exploration of the aftermath of WW1" and 10pm "Timewatch - The Last Day of WW1 (last in series)" and 11pm "What Did You Do In The Great War, Daddy? - children of men who died during WW1" You may find them interesting, and may answer your questions of yesterday.
I missed it. I did however study the 20th century when at college and with subsequent reading have a good understanding of the background. And because of that I can state that war is not about idealism, its a bout money and power, and the reason we went to war against Germany was to try to maintain our industrial advantage and global markets. Money and power, the only reason we ever had war, and the only reaon we ever will. So, in remembering those millions who diead, remember those few who made millions fomr their deaths.

The Allied forces were comprised primarily of UK, and US forces, witgh strong support from Canada and air support from Oz. The number of Russians fighting in France was somewhere between zero and 100. Fewer Serbs. And the French collaborationists were too busy working as spotters from the Germans to free their own country.
