As a free Flash slideshow module that will simply take a list of photos and show them one at a time automatically by fading from one image to another with ads and without extra controls, simply fills the area provided? At the moment I am building a simple site for a friend that is pretty graphics heavy and I found some Javascript code to rotate from one image to the next with fading. Looks good, works good. As soon as the site comes up, you see the first graphic and shortly it fades to the next. Nice, simple!.. But... Of course it only works nice and simple in IE, Opera and Firefox waits until all images are loaded before it displays any of them. So, yet another time I have to find alternate solutions for something that seems quite simple. So, I thought I might try to find a free flash rotator to handle this simple task. Well.. After digging and finding so many that etiher puts ads at the end of each cycle of pictures or is only free for personal use and $30 and up for anything commerical.... I give up! Come on, what does it take in Flash to do this?? So, anyone around here happen to know of such a thing and have alternatives? See, this is one of the things that I do not like about the software industry at times and is the focus of this post. It seems many developers are so busy trying to make some kind of revenue from their code, that they do not want to give anything away that might have some commercial usage. I guess they figure if a business wnats to use it, then it has value and they want paid for something developer considered had no value. Sure glad we have people out there that do not feel this way about business use such as Subtext and DNN where people contribute but the end result is free for every use, even commmercial! Now, that I have ranted a bit I feel better :-O Okay, so, anyone else have something they have looked for in the realm of free, that you only find the same situation, that is if you do find something free it is always just for personal use and not allowed for commercial use?

Did you try this? I use it on a nonprofit site that I do and it seems to work in IE, FF, and Safari.

Yeah, I would love to use Silverlight, it would be done deal in a short time. Unfortunately, for a business web site promotions it does not have enough coverage yet. Next year that could easily be another story.

It seems I have seen that before, but not sure, will have to check it out a bit more. The transitions do not work in IE8 though for some reason.

Also not Flash, but have you tried Thickbox/jQuery? http://jquery.com/demo/thickbox/[^] I believe it does everything your asking. I have not used it's slide show feature but the pop-up/overlay's work great.

Actually, I didn't see a slide show abilty in their demos, it seems it is more just for showing images, but not fading them in and out along with automatically cycling them. I may have missed that somewhere on the page thought. The problem I have with JQuery anything is from what I have seen it is like a 60K overhead just for the javascrip. That is huge when you add it to something graphics intensive already. Thanks for the ref!

They call thier slide show a "Gallery". There are different ways of using it including fades/slides, etc. I have only played with those features, but recall seeing nice slide shows probably on one of the user sites. The compressed code library is closer to 20K. I use the jQuery functions for Ajax/form checking/pop-up/graphics resizing/overlays, etc. So the overhead is not bad. I am pretty sure you could strip the library down, but it's not worth it to me since the site I use it on is heavy into high res images and another 20K is peanuts! Let us know if you find something you like.

I eneded up using this one. It still seems to have a preload of images which I plan to modify if time permits. Added a check for IE8 and performed what would happen in IE5 and it all seems to work. When I get the time, instead of having it preload all the images first I plan to check if the image that is going to be rotated in is already loaded and if not then load it. Once the image in rotated in, check to see if they next one is loaded and if not, then load it. As is, with the preloading, it has to load all the graphics before the page is displayed. It would be move flexible with a look-ahead loading scheme.

I ended up with this one: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex14/fadeinslideshow.htm[^] Which I modified to be IE8 compatible and hopefully, will soon add dynamic loading of the images instead of preloading them as I mentioned in another post here; http://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/View.aspx?fid=1159&msg=2818555[^] Lightweight script and seems to work good. Once the dynamic loading is in place it will be a keeper.

Thanks for the update. If you don't mind sharing the code, I'd love to see it when you are done. I'm currently using it at my church's website.

For the small size of graphics you are using, the preloading is probably not any issue. I am contemplating put the code together in the next few days (still have to finish out his site first) if I get the time for the preloading, but if you would like the rough IE patched version, you can pick it up at at: http://www.citationupholstery.com/[^] I threw the script (all but the initalization into the file: rotate.js Overall, the script seems to have a fairly good performance and effect is was I was looking to find.
