Virtual PC XP Home running under Pro -- same wireless connection?

I have VP2007 installed on my system running XPPRO I have everything installed and apparently working except... My real system uses a single wireless connection via a USB D-LINK adapter. My virtual OS XP Home does not seem to want to pick this up. Regardless of which USB port I plug the adapter into, no new hardware is found. When I ran the D-LINK installer it warned me about USB conflicts and having to upgrade to SP1 but that is going to be next to impossible considering I have no interent connection until the wireless works. Is there anyway I can get around this by changing parameters in the virtual OS -- IRQ numbers maybe? Cheers, Alex

Never used virtual PC but this is not what happens in vmware, qemu, xen, or virtualbox. I mean you will see hardware in only one node. The wireless connection should only be visible on the real host and then some virtual network should be able to route traffic from the guest over the wireless network on the host.

EDIT | Bah...that articles doesn't seem to address my issue in that the virtual OS doesn't even recognize the wireless adapter. :( When I attempt to install the D-LINK drivers in hopes the HW is found I get an error up HOTFIX: KB822603...more Googling I guess. :( Thats the conclusion I came to shortly after posting this... I was confused as to why the virtual OS wouldn't just piggyback on the real OS connection, so i googled a bit and found this: http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2006/10/24/why-doesn-t-virtual-pc-2007-recognize-my-wireless-network-adapter.aspx[^] Not sure if it addresses the issues I am having but hoipefully it does as it mentions Virtual PC 2007 not supporting wireless networks by default, so... *cross fingers* The idea of virtualization is really exciting to me...imagine all those programs I can test run now and just scrap when I find them buggy, instead of having all that crap clutter my real syste. :D

I think VPC might work but because my version of Windows which I want to install is so old (not even SP1) that is what is causing me issues...apparently...according to the KB articles i've been reading. I am in the process of download SP1a and installing it on the virtual OS and see if that fixes the damn problem like the error suggests it will. :P

VMWare Fusion is the best by far. It runs windows XP on my Mac faster and smoother than I've ever run it on any PC.

As far as I know VPC does not support USB drives.

Is it free though :P Virtual PC apparentlys sucks. :P Even with XP SP1a it's telling me I need to update to XP SP1. :(

I was going to get a brand spankin new quad core 64 bit and I wanted to run 64 bit windows as the root and do 32 bit window, linux, etc as VM's. First...I don't even know if my Win XP Pro has 64 bit on it, and even if it does, whether I can run little 32 bit OS's in it.

Yeah, I just replied to the other post, mentioning that I would like to run 64bit XP as the root and all the other 32 bit OS's as the VM's...can VMWare do that kind of thing?...there always seems to be some caveat in the docs...'when the planets align on tuesday of the third month and the second week of the third day and...' ...ya know?

I'll second that based on my one student who ran VMFusion on his Mac. He was the only guy with a Mac in the class and it ran VS2005 quite nicely.

Almost every piece of software I've come across in the last 5 years has said XP Service Pack 2...there was apparently a very big change in SP2, so you should get that instead of SP1...it had to do with memory management or some such...I couldn't install a lot of software unless I had SP2...just saying is all :)

No,. it's to do with MS forcing people to get XP SP2. It's rarely, if ever, a real requirement.

I liked having my laptop run an older version of XP so I could test IE 6 and IE7 on different machines.. But now I have all machines running SP3 and thus I need the virtual machine to work...and it is now...as I'm posting this from IE6 under XP Home virtualiztion :P Apparently Virtual PC doesn't like or want D-LINK wireless hardware. I've googled like crazy and found very little on the subject. I plug my desktop into the wall though and fire up Virtual PC...bang no problems :P Cheers, Alex

Is that the problem? I figured it was something to do with USB as the D-LINK installed kept telling m something like that...then I googled the hotfix and that is pretty much what it said... I'll continue googling and mybe find a fix or something :P

Yeah, my Mac Book Pro also runs VMWare, although it's not as high specced, it also runs fine.

vmware is best hands down. I'm running vmware server 1.07 on two virtual domains on older computers. vmware utilized uP bandwidth much more efficiently than vpc. vmware manages disk and network resources more efficiently as well. vmware has a tool called converter which has allowed me to virtualize physical machines which is a life saver. I have used vpc and vmware server (the free products) and there is absolutely no comparison, vmware trumpts u$'s connectex product.

vpc is not going to see it until the host os see's it. Fix it first on the host.

I use pretty much the same setup - with the 64bit version of VirtualBox in which I have 32 bit XP (to test my programs under a 32bit OS - it would be quite bad if they wouldn't work there)
