Actually it started with mysterious flashes of light on Mars.

I have two favorite books by Paul Davies. "The Fifth Miracle" was published in 2000, although the latest Amazon review( out of 33 customer reviews ) still likes it as of October 2008. This book goes SO much deeper into this theme of "Did life originate on Mars" than one-page-article level. It is was mostly accessible with my college physics. Problem is it's tough to hear the sound of ideas sailing over your head, who knows how much was inaccessible, hmm. Anyway at the "Bargain Price" of $5 for a new book this is a great deal. "The Cosmic Blueprint" was originally published in 1987, but has some very nice passages on the theme that the universe is not thought to be total lockstep-clockwork-deterministic anymore, that "Downward Causation" is at least thinkable. But I did not find Arthur Koestler's favorite quote in there: "Who has seen the wind ? Neither you nor I; But when the trees bow down their heads the wind is passing by." - Rossetti
