Unfortunately not. I can password protect a windows created zip using xp but new files added don't seem to require the password to be entered - only ones that were present when the password was applied - wierd!

It seems like only files themselves are password protected (not the zip file itself or folders inside it) and they are protected individually. So, every time you add a new document you need to remember to protect it. Worse yet, the password only blocks you from opening the file. Anyone can browse your zip and see the names of all the documents. Plus they can delete or overwrite the documents without requiring a password. Augh! Also, with all the zip password cracking software on the net (I really don't know if they are any good or not) it suggests to me that zip password protection isn't the strongest stuff out there. I've heard that TrueCrypt is pretty good and, as someone suggested above, they have a mobile version.

I borrowed my other half's USB memory stick tonight and noticed she has quite alot of sensitive data on it (she uses it at work and she works in a school). If she lost this it could be very serious as the data isn't encrypted in any way at all. Googling for ways to fix this brought up way too many results, so I figured I'd ask here (so I get informed/expert opinion rather than the usual internet junk) if there's one in particular you'd recommend. It needs to be able to be used in any PC without any install on that machine as she doesn't have those privileges on the computers at work - they're all Windows 2000 / XP. Preferably free, or cheap!

That's one of the best of its kind. I was going to recommend IronKey, but I'm also unsure of client-side requirements. (I've only used them on machines I have full access to.) Some I found on search that *may* work right and without admin access: Omziff portable encryption http://www.xtort.net/xtort-software/omziff/ [^] Rohos Minidrive says it creates a "hidden and encrypted" partition, and comes with a tool to access it without administrative rights. I don't know its crypto credentials, but I know it won't need admin to run. Look into it. http://www.rohos.com/free-encryption/[^]
Just tried the Rohos Mini Drive. Seems to work pretty much perfectly. It says it doesn't need admin - I'll have to test that tonight at home as all the work PCs(XP) run using the Administrator account :wtf: Thanks :) and from my Mrs :rose: :thumbsup:

Check this out http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php. It's free and can be green and you just run it from your USB stick without installation. I've used for a while and very happy with it.
To run it in 'Traveler Mode' (without install) requires that you're logged on as an administrator unfortunately. You can run it without admin if it's already installed on the system. The school will not install any software and no-one is allowed to run with admin privileges.

TrueCrypt has a portable version that runs directly from the USB and will probably be your best option.
Needs install or admin so no go unfortunately.

Use FreeOTFE. Free, works in "installed" and "traveler" mode, crypts using a wide choice of encryption algorithms. The cripted volume appears as a file on the USB device, and it is mounted as a regular volume once the correct passphrase has been provided.
Like TrueCrypt, requires admin for traveler or has to be installed. This seems to be the common way unfortunately.

I've tested it on Vista and on XP and it works, but it doesn't work fully when switching the drive between machines with different OSes. Only the partition browser part is then visible on the non original OS, not the virtual drive.

However, there is some competition for U3 MojoPac[^] PortableApps[^] <- Free, Open Source Ceedo[^] Given the specifics, you'll definitely have to check the options in detail to know their limitations. On a first glance, MojoPac seems to have the most promising offering, but it also costs $50. However, I think it might be time to set up a "live drive" or somesuch. Unless there is a lot of work being done in "non-wired" places, it just makes the most sense to put the storage on-line.
