Michael P Butler wrote: Don't they realise a happy content worker will be more productive. Dead right! That's exactly the point here. I tend to work from home but if I go into the office, it's just like working from home except that they don't have an espresso machine and (rightly) I have to go outside to smoke. But we work whatever hours we like, we have a fridge, a kettle, a constant supply of coffee, milk, orange juice. Each of us have our own CD players on the desk (obviously not paid for by the company). If it's going to affect anyone else we use headphones but the office is generally arranged so that people with the same tastes in music sit near each other so it's rarely necessary. We can use the internet for whatever we like, even when the boss is watching, as long as it never makes things slow for customer downloads. If I've finished what I'm doing one day then I leave at whatever time I want with no questions asked, so I never have to sit around pretending to work because there's no point in me starting the next job for half an hour. The potential for abuse is remarkable but I've never worked with a more productive group in my life. Trust your workers and they don't have to spend time trying to figure out ways around the system. Got a digital camera? Come in early one morning, decorate your cube in all sorts of ways that break the rules. Then snap a picture, set the image to the background picture for your workstation, and return your cubicle to it's former undecorated state. Ethics and rules are two different things. I try to be a very ethical employee ( for exmample, I would not write a mag or CP article that exposes stuff proprietary to work ), but as far as rules go, where I work is pretty relaxed about things that don't matter for people who understand what does matter, and apply themselves to it. There are a few rules that sorta bother me... dress code (no more coming to work in a dirty t-shirt & ripped jeans...), NTLM proxy (but i've found a good proxy for that now), not being able to install a fridge in my cube (but, *coolers* are ok, i think, even though mine does technically have a motor in it...), not being able to install a coffee maker in my cube... ...But overall, it's a great place to work. :)

I don't work there, but I know people who do. For those who don't know, Paychex is a payroll and accounting company based in Rochester, New York USA. It's run by an ego-maniac named Tom Galisano who has lost bids for Governor. Anyway, here are some of the rules that I've heard from this jail: - Women cannot wear slacks... skirts and dresses only. - Men must wear white shirts. - Blinds must be adjusted so they slant at same angle and must always be fully closed (no bare glass). - No personal pictures or other articles. - If you wear boots to work in the winter, you must change into dress shoes and place boots in desk drawer. I could not imagine working for a company like that. How do you respect a business that has wastes so much energy coming up with and enforcing this crap? -John "You don't love a woman because she is beautiful. I've worked for a few companies in my time and most management have never got it. Even after some of them have read Peopleware and Debugging the Development Process (bought for them by me), they still don't get it. Does being a senior manager blind you from the obvious. It certainly looks that way to me. Michael Programming is great. First they pay you to introduce bugs into software. Then they pay you to remove them again.
