It used to be you had to show an attempt to hire local help before giving a job to a non-resident applicant (at least that's what the lawyers told us). Companies that had a specific non-resident in mind would run ads that were so specific nobody would qualify but the person they wanted to hire.

yeah, that's sort of what I was thinking. Hell, I'd settle for a developer that could (a) think and (b) give a crap. In 25+ years I've learned that, yes, you have to have some ability to handle technology, but if cannot learn from mistakes or you don't care, it just doesn't matter what buzzword you have on your resume.

Is the salary per yr or per month ? If per yr for that much, I think they are just marketing not hiring. ;)

Heh.. if you're graduating into that salary band, that's not bad at all really. Just depends where in the UK you are. In Northern Ireland, that's the kind of money they pay for a developer/engineer with 3 years competent experience. We're cheap (intelligence economy) labour, on your doorstep ...which sucks :/

Ooops, just not changed my signature :) I actually have 2 years experience. I also agree that it isn't be a bad salary (or wasn't) but it would be difficult to live off that kind of money round here, I strugggle after paying my car insurance and running costs and I am fortunate I dont have rent etc :)

Worked well. If you got a bright one it broke the ice and she knew you had a sence of humour. If you got a dumb one, you could have fun telling her: - How difficult is was to get a meaningfull criticism into 25 words; - How you were going to have to give it up because it was costing you a fortune; - etc.

In my experience lots of companies do this. First round they advertise a ridiculously specific list of skills, and won't accept anything less. After abject failure the second round has a healthy dose of reality added. All it achieves is wasting their own time. The annoying part is that if you apply the first round then they may not consider your CV the second time round, so you have to guess which phase they are currently in.

It used to be you had to show an attempt to hire local help before giving a job to a non-resident applicant (at least that's what the lawyers told us). Companies that had a specific non-resident in mind would run ads that were so specific nobody would qualify but the person they wanted to hire.

I was thinking the same thing. It's probably part of the H1B requirements.

Gee all they are missing for a local job posting would be: Fluently bilingual spoken and written and will do 24 telephone support. According to a friend who was a headhunter what you don't see is "Doesn't have a funny name", "has at least 20 years expereince and is under 30"

I didn't goto he website to check, however, this sounds like it could potentially be a good job to me. It sounds like it is a pretty small team (good) considering they want you to be able to talk to people other than programmers (best aspect of the job imo), perhaps customers (great) and potentially do sales (sales jobs are extremely fun imo). It looks like they are trying to replace an old system (Server2003/IIS3) with newer technology vs2k8/IIS7/silverlight so you get to help design and implement a new system. All in all, it looks to me like you would have a lot of freedom to pursue what you fealt necessary to accomplish the task without too much of someone looking over your shoulder every 10mins. And to top it all off, I've always thought that no person needs to make more than 50K/yr no matter what job they are doing so the salary isn't a turn off for me. Work environment is far more important to me than the salary I take home. Of course, this doesn't mean that I'm gonna apply. I don't live anywhere near Atlanta and I'm not lookin to move. I also happen to like my current job. But if I were near atlanta, I'd definately look into it.

I got a consultant position (to pay bills between permanent positions) for a company based out of Atlanta that had a local office. I was trying to get a full time position from them for the benefits. The came back with an offer like this one (about 2/3 what I made previously) and said that is what the market was paying. When my consulting position ended, I started a new full time position for another company making almost exactly what I had previously been making. Obviously the Atlanta company wasn't localizing pay to their office locations, and I believe the Atlanta market to be paying poorly for IT.

I recall one vacancy specifying "10 years .net experience" as mandatory. I also recall that this was around 2006...
