job post setting up for failure?

Heh.. if you're graduating into that salary band, that's not bad at all really. Just depends where in the UK you are. In Northern Ireland, that's the kind of money they pay for a developer/engineer with 3 years competent experience. We're cheap (intelligence economy) labour, on your doorstep ...which sucks :/
Ooops, just not changed my signature :) I actually have 2 years experience. I also agree that it isn't be a bad salary (or wasn't) but it would be difficult to live off that kind of money round here, I strugggle after paying my car insurance and running costs and I am fortunate I dont have rent etc :)

I know what you mean - I used to say I was music critic for Exchange & Mart.
A music critic hey, well I tried saying I was an Engineer a few times but got backed into a corner about what sort of engineering :( Fortunately I am on the dole now and that seems infinitely more respectable :P

Worked well. If you got a bright one it broke the ice and she knew you had a sence of humour. If you got a dumb one, you could have fun telling her: - How difficult is was to get a meaningfull criticism into 25 words; - How you were going to have to give it up because it was costing you a fortune; - etc.

You mention "she", that reminds me of a time when I think I talked to a girl once, well there was definately long hair involved so I am assuming it was a girl :P

In my experience lots of companies do this. First round they advertise a ridiculously specific list of skills, and won't accept anything less. After abject failure the second round has a healthy dose of reality added. All it achieves is wasting their own time. The annoying part is that if you apply the first round then they may not consider your CV the second time round, so you have to guess which phase they are currently in.

It used to be you had to show an attempt to hire local help before giving a job to a non-resident applicant (at least that's what the lawyers told us). Companies that had a specific non-resident in mind would run ads that were so specific nobody would qualify but the person they wanted to hire.

I was thinking the same thing. It's probably part of the H1B requirements.

I didn't goto he website to check, however, this sounds like it could potentially be a good job to me. It sounds like it is a pretty small team (good) considering they want you to be able to talk to people other than programmers (best aspect of the job imo), perhaps customers (great) and potentially do sales (sales jobs are extremely fun imo). It looks like they are trying to replace an old system (Server2003/IIS3) with newer technology vs2k8/IIS7/silverlight so you get to help design and implement a new system. All in all, it looks to me like you would have a lot of freedom to pursue what you fealt necessary to accomplish the task without too much of someone looking over your shoulder every 10mins. And to top it all off, I've always thought that no person needs to make more than 50K/yr no matter what job they are doing so the salary isn't a turn off for me. Work environment is far more important to me than the salary I take home. Of course, this doesn't mean that I'm gonna apply. I don't live anywhere near Atlanta and I'm not lookin to move. I also happen to like my current job. But if I were near atlanta, I'd definately look into it.

I got a consultant position (to pay bills between permanent positions) for a company based out of Atlanta that had a local office. I was trying to get a full time position from them for the benefits. The came back with an offer like this one (about 2/3 what I made previously) and said that is what the market was paying. When my consulting position ended, I started a new full time position for another company making almost exactly what I had previously been making. Obviously the Atlanta company wasn't localizing pay to their office locations, and I believe the Atlanta market to be paying poorly for IT.

This is not a real job posting...
- The underlying company has a contractor in place whose contract is coming up for renewal.
- They need to justify the contractor's renewal, so they post the job so that only 1 or 2 people actually qualify.
- If they get candidates in for interviews, they always find something wrong, and so justify the current contractor.
Sadly, people that respond to these types of ads really just help the person currently in the position.

When "consulting" like that, companies can get away with it, because they expect churn. The gigs tend to be short, so turnover is not unusual. Companies hiring too cheaply set themselves up for much higher costs. If the developer is any good, someone will cherry pick him / her in a heartbeat. I know my company would. Except for Kinar. Sounds like he's happy with 50K or less ;)

Yes I am serious. I live in the US in the midwest. 50K per adult (in the case of a couple, the household gets 100K) IMO, if you NEED more than 50K (or 100K if married) to live on and raise your family, then you seriously need to re-evaluate your lifestyle. If you do happen to make more than 50K, any surplus should go to helping those around you who dont (charity).

As a western-Canadian, I see nothing out of the ordinary about this positing - except that they would also be wanting a degree or diploma (in engineering or computer science), and the pay would be measured in Canadian dollars. Basically, they're looking for a junior developer. The related buzzword bingo is just wishful thinking or naivety on their part. This happens all the time.

They're asking for far too many checkmarks for a junior role though. no way could you be even dangerous in that many techs after 3 years.

I wholeheartedly agree. On further reflection, I think that Erik Westermann got it right on the previous post. They already have a candidate, but must go through the process to appear to be fair. Of late, I have noticed a trend away from specific buzzwords and more toward foundational skills. Perhaps it is just my imagination. Has anybody else noticed this trend?

No, but I've been in my current position for 4 years and haven't been looking as a result.
