Is there a letter before Alpha? I want to label a release as a pre-alpha and just wondered if there was some name I could give it besides pre-Alpha?

I have seen some companies label such products "Community Version", aka discarded dogfood.

    Best wishes, Hans

Use a space character. It best represents that blank stare you get when you tell the idiot asking for "pre-alpha" software that you were under the impression that a prototype is nothing more than a technology demo or proof of concept.

I would call both of those beta. And unlike what google calls beta these are full with bugs.

I think it's called a Proof of Concept or Prototype. A good symbol might be "?". Not sure how that translates into Greek. :)

Maybe we should have a pre-meeting to prepare for the meeting first.

No. Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet and is traditionally used as a designation for software that is in development. Alpha software is typically so incomplete and bug-ridden to be unusable, so it's not normally released to anyone except the developers working on it. That definition has been warped in recent years, partially by the eternal betas that seem to be en vogue right now, but most developers still follow it. If you do need to share it and it's so early in its development that you can't even consider it an alpha version, call it a prototype or proof-of-concept so it's clear what you're talking about. Ed

I'm not sure that's a good idea. Could we have a meeting to discuss it?

If I had my way I'd call it a "pile of poo" - but those that make these decisions are insistent that it is ready for release (because you can run the application and log in and some pretty screens appear). I was hoping to find something to put in the 'Help..About' page to indicate its unreadyness without attracting the ire of those that pay the bills! Our Prodct Name Here - eth release 0.0.1234 or something
