But making sure you can survive starts with being someone who can. The food, ammo, weapons, and lifestyle are just tools. They'd be of no use to a lot of folks who have lived their lives assuming that society would always take care of them.

agreed but it is still difficult (for me, anyway) to be sneeringly critical of good instincts and taking steps to protect your family in a period of potential chaos is no more than that. it is elitist, ignorant and plain foolish to think otherwise.

It was actually a reasonable take. I don't see how there could be any controversy over people attempting to prepare for an emergency.
