The title says it all. BBC News Headlines "World mourns pop legend Jackson"; nope, not me - I didn't know the man. I feel no more sadness at his passing than at any other so-called celebrity. I mourn when it's personal, not when it's some gushing spew of public "grief" which is nothing more than worshiping at the altar of the venal and banal.

...it's not like there is any serious news these days. No wars to speak of, the economy is just rolling right along, our politicians have finally cleaned up their acts, we have plenty of cheap clean energy.

Well, when I heard the news last night I was highly upset. I met Michael Jackson a few years ago when he wrote a book about my old company; imagine my surprise that it wasn't the hugely famous inventor of Jackson Structured Programming that they were talking about.

Ditto. When I saw my friends sobbing over MJ's death, I said the same thing[^]; I don't understand how people weep over someone they don't know. That's such a foreign idea to me.

Same thing happened when Lady Diana died. In the week before her passing, the tabloids were full of vitriol and crap about how she should keep her nose out of politics because she doesn't understand it, and that she should just sit quiet and look pretty like she was supposed to. In the days after her death, the media was full of stuff about what a wonderful person she was, lauding all the work she did for charity and landmine victims and so forth. There was even a very interesting documentary about this, but I cannot remember what it was called. I'd love to watch it again. As for me? On the day of her funeral I was out roller blading with a bunch of friends. The streets were empty and it was a once in a lifetime chance to trick off of things that we couldn't normally get close to. We were skating down the middle of 4-lane roads that would have gotten us killed on any other day and flying off of curbs, walls and rails straight into the street - even grinding on the central lane divider in the middle of the road. Everyone else was sitting at home weeping in front of the TV over someone they'd never met. Bizarre.

Ditto. There was a quote on the NYT today comparing him to Mozart. Please. He was a great dancer, had great rhythm, and wrote some nice tunes, and that's about the end of it. But Mozart? W. T. F?

Well of course he couldn't. He didn't exist from the shoulders down, which makes it much more amazing that he wrote so many amazing pieces of music. I know he didn't exist from the shoulders down because I've seen his likeness.

I feel no more sadness at his passing than at any other so-called celebrity. I mourn when it's personal, not when it's some gushing spew of public "grief" which is nothing more than worshiping at the altar of the venal and banal.

I do get that - he touched the lives of so many, of course there were several others that got plenty more touching. Sorry couldn't resist.

That's how I got to 53, last count, so by now 30 are probably real people.

He's kept tweeting that he has Megan Fox's phone number. I'm surprised the number's so low.

Saying that he was a pedophile because there were people who hated him so much that they accused him for things he wasn't guilty is just unfair. You repeat what was said in a TV with no idea what the truth was. I examined this topic more deeply and I know that this man was a freak with a freaky face, he was insane and had weird habits. But he certainly was not a pedophile. X|
