This is weird (centos.org)[^]: " July 30, 2009 04:39 UTC This is an Open Letter to Lance Davis from fellow CentOS Developers It is regrettable that we are forced to send this letter but we are left with no other options. For some time now we have been attempting to resolve these problems: You seem to have crawled into a hole ... and this is not acceptable. You have long promised a statement of CentOS project funds; to this date this has not appeared. You hold sole control of the centos.org domain with no deputy; this is not proper. You have, it seems, sole 'Founders' rights in the IRC channels with no deputy ; this is not proper. When I (Russ) try to call the phone numbers for UK Linux, and for you individually, I get a telco intercept 'Lines are temporarily busy' for the last two weeks. Finally yesterday, a voicemail in your voice picked up, and I left a message urgently requesting a reply. Karanbir also reports calling and leaving messages without your reply. Please do not kill CentOS through your fear of shared management of the project. Clearly the project dies if all the developers walk away. Please contact me, or any other signer of this letter at once, to arrange for the required information to keep the project alive at the 'centos.org' domain. Sincerely, Russ Herrold Ralph Angenendt Karanbir Singh Jim Perrin Donavan Nelson Tim Verhoeven Tru Huynh Johnny Hughes " CentOS is my favorite Linux distro - I hope they find their lost leader :)

Not trying to be morbid or anything, but have they considered that maybe the guy lives alone and has died? Perhaps they should be contacting authorities, instead of posting "open letters" that a dead person is going to be unable to respond to ... Just say'in.

CentOS is the poor man's Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with all RedHat labels replaced by Centos. This way they can redistribute RHEL for free. If you don't want to pay for it, it's a nice distro for deploying things like Oracle.

All I do on Linux is programming, and CentOS is pretty dev-friendly. Besides, it is almost an exact copy of RedHat Enterprise which is the dominant server distro.

i use it to build binaries from C++ that i then upload to my ISP's RedHat servers (since they don't give me access to a compiler on their machines).

Even if he decided to deliberately pull out from the project, the source code (I guess) is available under GPL, I don't see why they can't fork if the need to. I'm sure that all contributors will follow. Moreover, merging the fork back to the trunk is relatively easy nowadays.

Then get his address since he controls the domain, there must be someone within driving distance. Sorry, that's a hardware solution.

Ha, the only cp'er in driving distance of me, figured through my domain, hasn't been here for a while. So much for 'driving distance'.

Even if he decided to deliberately pull out from the project, the source code (I guess) is available under GPL, I don't see why they can't fork if the need to. I'm sure that all contributors will follow. Moreover, merging the fork back to the trunk is relatively easy nowadays.

The source yes, the domain's in his name, as apparently are the financials, those are harder to deal with.

Not trying to be morbid or anything, but have they considered that maybe the guy lives alone and has died? Perhaps they should be contacting authorities, instead of posting "open letters" that a dead person is going to be unable to respond to ... Just say'in.

We are sure he is not dead, on vacation, or sick.

Looks like people saw your post and updated the centos.org page.:)
