.. since you were 18 to when you were 30 (or so far if your age < 30) The average I have heard is around 8. I was reading a book which said that people who change at least 8 jobs by the time they are 30 have more growth in career. How true is it? BTW I have changed only 3 jobs.

I've spent the last 15 years ducking that move. When I got the current contract it was stated clearly that I am a developer, will stay a developer and will not be "promoted" or have my "career" managed. They recently tried to get me interested in Oracle BI so I narrowed the definition to applications developer. HR really don't like me.

When I was an IT Manager, the rest of the snr mgt team couldn;t understnad why the payscales I requested overlapped. How could a developer possibly be paid more than a team leader? The truth of the matter is that some people were more valuable to me as developers than they would have been as team leaders - so I wanted to pay them sufficiently to keep 'em happy in the role without them thinking they needed promotionto get better remuneration. It worked well. nil staff turnover in 5 years. Of course there was the occasional bellyache when a team leader found they earned less than a developer -old habits dying hard - but generally all was well. I just got plain bored with the management game - took a redundancy package at the right time and haven't looked back (well, not much, unfortunately even developers as good as me rarely make as much as Snr IT Managers!)

You did that, too? I sold Rainbow vacuum cleaners. A $400 machine that to this day, I can't honestly point to any brand that does a better job of cleaning carpets. But my assigned territory was La Puente, CA, USA, which at the time was populated by Mexican illegal immigrants living on welfare. Most didn't speak English, and had 12 kids who thought that peeling paint on the baseboards was candy. They only called to get the free set of steak knives we gave away with each sales pitch. Awful experience...

I had only one change. I served eight years in the Air Force after school, then two years at a new company. From then on, changes were very quick.

Depends what you mean by changed jobs. I worked through a temp agency for 2 years and must have worked for 20-30 different companies in that time. Permanent jobs though I think 3 till 30

I've changed jobs 3 times. The current job is probably the best (technically). [Added] The first job (which I haven't counted in this list) was delivering milk, door to door in the morning. I'm glad to have worked my way out of those days. :) [/added]

let me think, This is my third job, although officially it's my fourth. I worked one month for a consultancy company, but I never programmed one letter for them. I wouldn't say that is true, because here you'll be considered a "job hopper" if you change that much. Besides, your diploma, skills etc are far more important then changing job once in a while. (and luck also counts, the corporate atmosphere has to be right to allow you to move) I consider myself doing fine in my career. :-)

Job in terms of career, I'm still on my first (I'm only 23) and I've been here 2 years now. Including other jobs, +2 to that. I worked in a pub for 5 years to help finance uni, and during the same period for a year or so I had another side "job" as a "laser games supervisor" for 1 night a week. That was a fun job.

.. since you were 18 to when you were 30 (or so far if your age < 30) The average I have heard is around 8. I was reading a book which said that people who change at least 8 jobs by the time they are 30 have more growth in career. How true is it? BTW I have changed only 3 jobs.
