The recruitment agent was a friend of mine, and she mentioned they found it hard to get candidates...

I've seen this in job adverts before I asked thee agent why. The response from the agent was (and even he was embarassed) "The company thinks that a senior developer shouldn't need that level of help". I asked whether he'd put many people forward, the response was a simple "Nope.". I actually felt sorry for the agent that day. Some companies just aren't worth working for.

Win32 API has around 3000+ class, excluded classes etc. As for .net who knows, the lucky candidate will have to be have an IQ of 200+.

May be they were *really* fed up with MSDN? :) Seriously though, the MSDN offline help still SUCKS big time. But I don't know how can anyone write code without referring to it (at least the online version), no matter how much it sucks. Did you check with them for all the criterias? May be another criteria was to work without a monitor. I mean - you should be able to visualise what the computer should be doing at any given moment. Come on, it's a "senior" developer position, man!

About six years ago now I had an interview at a small company in Manchester. Part of the was a programming test on VB6, something I didn't do often (still don't! ). For some reason I decided to go straight into help, and it wasn't there. The senior engineer said in all seriousness: "We don't believe in using help". I still aced the interview and test, but declined the job. The slave traderrecruiter wasn't very happy, and asked me why, and I told him about that and the fact that unlike as advertised they had no intention of moving to .NET (my primary reason for moving). He swore that they did, and he'd organise a conference call to discuss my qualms. Quite early in the conversation the senior technical guys said: ".NET is a flash in the pan, it isn't the future, you need to concentrate on VB6, that's where the money is!" The recruiter ended the call soon after.

Yep, this was the reason the Agent gave me too... Strangely enough I don't keep the syntax to every function call in MFC or .Net in my head... I have enough trouble breathing an walking at the same time:)

What you mean your slave trader didn't actually lie to the interviewer on your behalf? I had one recruiter tell on company that I had 6 years of VB experience when I expressly told them I didn't.... Very embarrassing in the interview...

Companies do not have MSDSN subscriptions, unless they are Microsoft partners or purchased it in Volume Licensing. If it is neither than the MSDN subscription is for an indvidual in the company.

Common misconception: Agents will try to get you as much as they can, as they work on a %, so the more they get you, the more they earn. Reality: Agents try to recruit you at the lowest possible rate they can for 2 reasons. 1) They often have a fixed amount their client will pay, and they will pocket the difference and 2) If they get someone really good, really cheap that client will return to them for the next recruitment. The extra business far outweighs the couple pounds extra they would get for getting you £20 more a day.

Companies do not have MSDSN subscriptions, unless they are Microsoft partners or purchased it in Volume Licensing. If it is neither than the MSDN subscription is for an indvidual in the company.

It does say MSDN Subscription (Volume License).

I did have to associate my LiveId with details that sent to a previous employee (he left before I got here). Now I only wish I had bandwidth to download something (on second thought an extra hard disk might be a good idea too!).
