Me think by writing "how ridiculous" without giving out arguments for (or against) pretty much makes that statement "censorable" in the context of academic studies. If you feel really censored, go see the dean (or whoever is in charge) and state your case ...

Have you heard some of the talking heads (radio commentators) that say freedom of speech is being challenged because you are to turn in people who do not agree with the president? I hope it is hype and not actual. djj

It's called spin, the reality of it is the administration setup a place for people to toss those wonderfully false rumors these people spread into so that they could be aware of them and show how exactly they're false. A government sponsored snopes of sorts.

Yeah that is correct.... however, if you say something inappropriate in a certain setting, you may be penalised. There are no absolute rights! Try making antisemitic or racist remarks and see how far you'll go with your freedom of speech, or trying telling your boss that he/she is redicolous and see if freedom of speech will protect your job...... Anyway, wish you the best. I hope you don't get penalized.

It was flag@whitehouse.gov. They also have databases for political descendants, its called the domestic terrorist database. There is also a no fly list, over a million Americans are on it, without there knowledge. If you get on any of these lists, you are on it for life.

True, but they can call you an idiot, fail you, and move on with their day. Free speech is all yours, deal with the consequences of it.

Yeah, you can go around breaking windows too, but you have to deal with the consequences. There is a big difference between expressing your thoughts with vocal patterns or written symbols and breaking windows.

One thing is to have an opinion and voice it. You should always have this right. It is called freedom of speech. Another thing is how and when you voice your opinion. It's called manners, cerimony. This is usefull because helps us avoid becoming like hutsus & tutsis or serbians & croatians cutting their throats for nothing. Or something like Kanye West and Joe Wilson. You can voice your opinion in the university, but use civilized language and manners. The place should not be like an internet forum, you know?

Ok, so I'm going to school for my Associate's degree online. I had a question about a subject so I zipped an email over to my instructor. In the email I stated at one point "the whole thing makes no sense to me" and then I proposed a couple of scenarios written as questions and followed it up with "how ridiculous". I was promptly informed that content was inappropriate. Never mind it was my opinion and is protected by freedom of speech or that America was founded, fought, bought and paid for with the blood of my forefathers to protect the rights of an individual to express his or her opinions without recourse. I feel like Victor Navorski(Tom Hanks) in The Terminal: "I am......unacceptable" :laugh: It's going to be a long semester.

You say you're right to free speech was violated, so I'm guessing you were imprisoned after the incident, correct? Or at the very least, did the government step and threaten you?

His right was restricted, and he might be punished for attempting to exercise his basic god given right. How dare he use words to express his thoughts. And if the federal government or state government is contributing financially or regulating the school, then it was government sanctioned violations. Its criminal, criminals need to be prosecuted, and the institutions need to be corrected.

Actually, pretty much everyone has that right. It's called free speech, and it applies to other people's words just as much as it does to your own.

OK, I'm a non-american, but even I know the freedom of speech thing says that the GOVERNMENT cannot restrict your speech byond certain well described limits. You sending an obnoxious email to an instructor, and him saying it was unacceptable is a liiiiittle bit short of being rounded up for acid showers, non? I *have* read about plenty of egregious problems to do with trampling of speech in US campuses, and people being all but kicked out because they did not sign up to some political agenda they didn't agree with. But on the evidence you've presented (and I understand why you may not give every detail), yours is not in that group. What rights are you referring to? Educational institutions are a business, and he is being paid to serve Dirk, and Dirk has to pay one way or another for his instructor's services. The school should refund Dirk's money if they can't perform their duties.
