I ran into this a few days ago, and this[^] is an easy-peasy lemon-squeezy way of doing it. Tres cool, non?

I'm interested in anything virtual after switching entirely to a virtual environment for development and other stuff; after reading up a bit confused. VMWare already has a free utility to convert physical (or virtual) machines to virtual ones and it works very well (VMWare converter). What does this bring to the table beyond that?

Huh? They do? Why couldn't I find it on their site? Is it free? Am I a dumbass?

That looks pretty cool! Is there a way of doing this for Sun VirtualBox virtual hard drives (.vdi files) ?

If everything was not true, would it be not true that everything is not true? So by saying everything is not true, you are automatically denying that everything is not true. Im so confused... FreeDOS - An open source modern MS-DOS/PC-DOS replacement.

Yeah it's free and it works *extremely* well. It's been around for a couple of years now. I use it for all sorts of stuff, we can even bring in a client's entire machine virtually using it as the utility is relatively small and lightweight to install. I also used it to create a virtual copy of our business server on Serverbeach so I can refer to it for settings and stuff. And I use it all the time to resize hard drives on virtual machines etc etc. Best of all it can work *while the physical machine is still running*. Very handy: http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/[^]

I'm already installing it on the machine I want to work with. I usually don't do VMWare since its not free and VirtualBox can open VMWare HD no problem. Thanks for the heads up though!

That's just a bit for bit copy. I do that all the time to make dvd and cd isos for software installs. I only use the cdrom drive to install the os after that its .iso

Yes John, but you're a Linux guru, whilst I only dabble :) I've never heard of dd even during my college days. Besides, that whole plan has been ditched because of the (good) wrench that John C threw into my plans.

Interesting, didn't know that. I trialed virtual box heavily a year ago against VMWare workstation (created absolutely identical machines in both and visual studio etc etc) because I was switching to all virtual development and testing and VMWare slayed Virtual Box for performance and features. I use it so heavily it's easily worth the price but if virtual box was faster I'd have used it instead. If anyone ever suggests that VirtualBox runs virtual windows faster than VMWare workstation I'll try it again.

Check this framework out from .Net DiscUtils here[^]. It's got support for Microsoft & VMWare virtual disc formats as well as a whole load of others. Plus the whole thing is in C# :-D

That would be the snack I just finished. New potatoes quickly microwaved are my new cool snack. One minute per spud, after a few stabs with a fork. Now I need a whole lot more potatoes.
