My company (filled with Japanese guys) was soliciting names for a new security service app, and one of the suggestions just slew me: anytime staring system. He made sure we knew the correct acronym by adding it in parentheses after. I so hoped we'd pick that one and start selling our ASS all over Tokyo.

Around 10 years ago the department I was working for (in a very large company) needed a simplified issue tracking system. They liked the idea of Remedy but didn't have budget to buy it (capex freeze - you've got to love the way companies work) so got me to write it instead. Son Of REmedy Did a logo with a bandaid on it and everything. SORE went into production, doubt it still is though.

I worked on a system call FUTS (Fire Unit Test Set). I was told it's a control system and not a test set so I tried to get it renamed to FUCS (Fire Unit Control System)...they stayed with FUTS. :laugh:

The higher ups at my company requested an program that could generate and send an e-mail when given a nicely formatted HTML document and a spreadsheet of e-mail addresses. I called the program Simple Program for Autonomous Mail Relay and no one batted an eye....

I recommended the name ANEMICS for one of our company's products used for Non-Emergent Transports. It's generally used while transferring dialysis patients and such. Needless to say, they boss didn't pick my suggestion.

I built a system for a company whose name started with T. It was a timesheet system for their HR people. So we called the system T Human Resources Employees Activity Timekeeping System, or THREATS for short. The employees were told "you either use THREATS or you'll get some".

A good friend of mine has been retired from the industry for 10 years. Did development for aerospace way back in the day. He revolutionized the org 30+ years ago when he created their first payroll management system. Got away from all those pesky manual calculations of leave balances, taxes, rates, etc. Saved loads of time at the fiscal year end when which usually took 4 people 48 hours to do. (they slept in shifts) What did he call it? Well, Payroll Management System of course. They would talk about PMS all the time. BTW, this was actually before PMS was discovered as a syndrome and stood for what it is known for today. :laugh:

The company I presently work for is working on a new product line - SkyView (we're an avionics firm). But wait, it gets better. We have multiple types of devices, and they all need to communicate to each other through our own proprietary network protocol: SkyView Network. Of course, this is a little long to verbalize, so (if you haven't figured it out already), we lovingly refer to it as... SkyNet. Unfortunately Summer Glau has yet to return our calls referring to our job offer.

I once worked on the Juvenile Probation Information Sharing System. Which was changed to Juvenile Probation Information Program (JPIP) as soon as the boss saw the acronym.

In the 90s I wrote DOS based GUI. Graphics driver was written in assembly - GASM.ASM ... and backup was ORGASM.ASM (from original gasm) :-D 15 years later I would prefer to name it ORG.ASM - it looks better :cool:

At work, I was asked to write an application that would scan our customer addresses, and correct them according to what the Post Office said they should be. Naturally I named it Corperate Address Cleansing or CAC for short. I'm amazed that even management refer to the application by the acronym! :laugh:
