when you are so not in the mood to work? Honestly, I can't be bothered to do anything today. I've been staring at my project in Visual Studio for about 2 hours now.

Do almost anything else that you enjoy. Either some inspiration will spring, fully formed, into your consciousness, or it won't. Win-win situation, for you if not for the project. :)

I can't get myself to do that either. I think I'll cook, and collect my thoughts while cooking.

I read the specifications of something I'll be doing in a few weeks time. After a few minutes of reading them I get extremely motivated to do something else. Intel's processor manuals are very good at this.

I usually walk away for a while and do something else. That break gives me time to think it through and helps to clear my head. Course at my age there not cobwebs they're brain cells that I've killed over the years with an unhealthy life style...if you catch my drift...:) Mike

That's two hours you'll never get back. Experienced developers know that just sitting at a computer doesn't get any work done. If you're using the computer, fine; but if not, then get away from the computer. Do something you enjoy, take a walk, or just relax and let the ideas bubble on the back burner until you have something to write. Many times I'll even print out code so I can make notes on the paper but not actually touch the computer until I'm sure I have the right solution to a problem. This is the sort of thing that managers don't understand and why a cube farm in Elbonia can't produce quality products.

Its way, way, waaaay too early for that here in Amman. Not a pub open at this time of day. Besides, currently I'm on medication and I can't imbibe for some time and as is, I've cut down so much I might as well be considered a teetotaler.

I just don't work. I just have to get my 40 hours work done in the week, so I can take breaks. In fact, I have about 4 hours to finish today for this week. Otherwise, if I'm home, I like to take showers. That's where I get lots of thinking done, and they're very relaxing. I also feel refreshed and ready to tackle problems. If, however, I don't want to work because I'm working on something particularly boring, I like to surf the lounge and CodeProject articles while I work (back and forth between CodeProject and work). That way, I feel like my brain isn't being completely wasted on something monotonous. I become less productive than my best productivity, but more productive than not working at all.

Visual Studio is an excellent GUIIDE.

I take the motivation test. I look all the things I have to do and ask myself how motivated I am to do that task, then pick the task that I'm motivated to do. Failing any motivating task (happens often enough) I ask myself, why am I not motivated to do that task. After answering that for the various tasks, I ask myself, what would be required for the task to be motivating? Usually there's a pretty good answer to that, ranging from "well, it's a no-brainer and the customer will be impressed" to "it'll get me one step closer to billing the client" to "if I did it using this approach, it might actually be fun", and so forth. So then I repeat the first question given my better understanding of where the real motivations lie, and then usually something pops out as "yeah, I'm motivated to do that." However, failing all the above head-games, I just go play some online poker or work on an article or eat some chocolate. Marc

Those are the times I spend doing busy work. I might apply Windows updates, update other software, tweak my backup settings, cleanup old files, organize files, et al. Basically, all work tasks that you don't normally have time to do and that don't require you to be fully engaged.

I came in today to find only four other people in the office. There is usually 15 people in here. I thought I missed a memo giving us the day off or something. Anyway, it's so quiet in here I can hear my eyelinds blinking. No way I can get anything done like this.

when you are so not in the mood to work? Honestly, I can't be bothered to do anything today. I've been staring at my project in Visual Studio for about 2 hours now.

You sound like me. X| I'll offer a suggestion, but in practice I'm a pretty staunch hypocrite when it comes to following the 'rules' I know would work if I would only apply them. I often get overwhelmed by the magnitude of the work that needs to be done. I find myself thinking, "I want the problem solved now. It's too big to solve in one sitting, so feh." I vapor lock, just like writer's block. "They" say the approach there is to bite off small pieces and ignore the size of the big pro(blem|ject). Once some progress is made, no matter how little, it can inspire one to keep slogging through. I think that's what Brady is saying : if you can do something, anything, it can get you moving in the right direction.

Amen to that. Now management is taking away the cubes and giving us open office space. Supposed to increase collaboration. :sigh: I think all it does is make it harder to think/concentrate on difficult problems.

What a wretched city. Looks like a rat maze.

Well, the city has been essentially in existence since 8500 BC, of course its going to look like a rat's maze.
