His answer was something along the lines of, "Yes, we rely heavily on unit testing. Coupled with code reviews, this produces code with fewer defects."

Oh please. Nasa isn't that far ahead of the game. No space agency has ever been. When they replaced the computer systems aboard the Russian Space Station they had an entire room replaced with a laptop that was roughly twice as good. The shuttles are 1970s tech being forced to work 20 years after they were supposed to be phased out by amazing craft able to make orbit and return with no boosters... That was the plan in the 70s anyway, and then they lost enough of their budget that they are keeping the things together with duct tape and bubble gum. The Hubble's been the one bright star in their program of late and it should have been retired what, 10 years ago with a new one? "We'd like to do unit tests, but our schedules, budget, and computers are not in a position to let us. Excuse me, I have to go, they aren't authorizing overtime."

NASA does insane amounts of testing/documentation in their codebase. The shuttle codebase is over a million lines; they've had a grand total of two bugs found in the release version in over 25 years of use. :cool: The NASA office that wrote the codebase was the only organization to ever get a CMMI[^] level 5 assessment with no negative findings in their initial audit. The downside is that they probably spend 5-10x as long writing documentation as writing code. :doh:
