In the light of the previous thread - What project that is free to use have you donated to recently?

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

It doesn't count as a "free project", but my donation goes to CRY (all the time). Another recent one was for Enable India[^] I'll donate to Wikipedia too (that banner makes me feel so guilty every time I use it :-O ).

Paint.NET, InfraRecorder, TortoiseSVN. I prefer to donate to niche projects as they're less likely to get donations. But yet again, how can a few dozen Euros/Dollars a month can make the least difference?

At least for the time being it is a motivation more than an reimbursement. I generally think that the majority of development would not be commercially viable - look at the manhours that just went into creating and maintaining the Top 10 library articles here, and consider how many apps were built on top of it. I do hope that my post will motivate a few to donate to their favorite project, sooner or later.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

Regrettably, I don't donate to open source projects, what with donating to charities such as the National Deaf Society, The Childrens Society, PDSA and quite a few more. I'm kind of tapped out in the donations stakes.

Every year I volunteer as a cook and server at the food bank for Thanksgiving. Also, I give to them monthly. And earlier this year I donated to Arch Linux.

Thanks. I do change them occasionally when I come across a gem that registers with me.

I find these things equivalent, in a way :) Our benefit from open source projects may be more direct than the benefit from the efforts of charities, but the pattern is similar.

I hadn't seen me donating to a high-profile project such as wikipedia a month ago. I'm ambivalent about it because it's kind of "replacing the internet" - but the donaiton was for the times I look up a specific algorithm, formula or scinetific term. I'm very tight for money at the moment, but as soon as I have any spare I will donate to ScrewTurn wiki. I use it all the time, aside from 1 issue I have had recently it "just works" (not something I say lightly), and Dario has given support in the forums when I have tried to fix the 1 problem I have had. For free. I would recommend that anybody looking for their own wiki take a look at it, and donate some money when they find that they like it :) Chris

I donate 120.00 month to a program that helps families in my local area who are in need of help. 100% of the money goes to those in need. This Christmas, I gave an extra 800.00 to that same program. I donated 500 to the Veterans of Foriegn wars this year. I think I'm done donating for the year. :)

I'm ambivalent about it because it's kind of "replacing the internet" - but the donaiton was for the times I look up a specific algorithm, formula or scinetific term. There are few places on the internet that have the necessary amount of rigor yet attempt to be accessible to a layman.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

And yet also provide an avenue for people that couldn't get into law enforcement a way to abuse authority. :) A great thing to donate to!

In the light of the previous thread - What project that is free to use have you donated to recently?

IZarc -- just gave them (him?) my second donation; first was a couple of years ago. Still my favourite zipper! (Hmm, now there's a statement that could be misinterpreted!)

I've tried to donate to Wikipedia a couple of times, but their system never accepts my credit card for some reason. Only place I've ever had trouble with it.

If you will post your credit card number, expiration date, and security code, I'm sure someone here will be glad to help you with it. ;)
