I am a PC and Windows 7 was my idea

Is it only me or somebody else here also thinks that the Microsoft Marketing should have come up with a better ads for Windows 7. "I am a PC and Windows 7 was my idea" does not impress me a bit. On the other hand, I feel that Mac ads are a lot better.

You actually watch ads?

If you got the feeling MS actually listened when you complained the commercial would make more since.

The Mac ads are MUCH funnier. I'm waiting for Apple to spin MS's new one against them... "Hi, I'm in public relations. After the Vista disaster, Microsoft came to me and said, 'Hey Bob, how are we going to make people like us again?' I told them to just change the name and pretend it's an entirely new product! I'm in public relations, and Windows 7 was my idea."

And yet are still ineffective because John Hodgeman (PC, the funny one) is endearing while Justin Long (Mac, the douchebag) is a....erm....douchbag. Who'd want to be a Mac and be a douche like Justin?
Think of it as a Vaudville act... The PC guy is the funny one, and the Mac guy is the straight man... He's not supposed to be funny, just provide contrast for the funny one.

The Mac ads make Stephen feel good since they show and idealized Jobs and a caricatured Gates. This is important since Jobs is not a healthy guy. As far as selling home computers go - Mac's share of the market ain't changing, ergo, the ads suck.

Well it has changed a lot in the past 3 years. I think it will keep rising.

If I were running the company, after demoting Steve B to the janitorial staff and firing Ozzie the Astronut, I'd take Microsoft Marketing out back and beat them severely with a large stick, fire them all, and get some fresh blood, hopefully a tad more competent.

I don't think you, I and many of the people here are in their target group. We're the kind of people who look for the new features on our own and critque them before deciding to upgrade. Microsoft is targeting the masses, many of whom will upgrade or buy a new PC sooner when they see what great things await them. In that sense, I think they work perfectly and separate themselves from the Mac ads which, although funny, really just preach to the choir. Cheers, Drew.

You think they'll ever get back to 4% of the global market - their high?

It is already 3.86% and based on the current growth trend, they will easily reach 4%. Part of the reason is that their hardware is getting cheaper.

And part of the reason was called Vista - but that's yesterday, not tomorrow. Mac's will always be a niche machine. Nice, cute, even sexy. But even before Weven they dropped from fourth place to fifth place in U.S. sales, hardly exciting news for the marketing dept.

Of course, they will remain a niche market till they try to make major inroads into the Enterprise market. From my own personal experience, I see more and more people buying mac. They also had a great October[^]. As long as the sales are increasing it should not be of a grave concern where one is positioned in the marketplace.
