I don't get touchy-feely with my bank account.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

It's interesting. I asked my staff if they would, and they said no (I hope they were joking), so I thought I'd see how prevalent this attitude is. It seems you are all more honest (or talk a better game) than my team.:~

I'd be monitoring the account closely for a few months, hoping to get further payments. Meanwhile I wouldn't spend a penny over my normal salary. If a few months of pay like that arrived, then I'd be long gone. If not, or if discovered, plausible deniability. ;P Sadly, I think I would done the same as the man in the article. :^) //L

I saw a story where a caterer was paid $29,000+ dollars on a bill for $29, they considered the extra a 'tip' and promptly spent it. The institution which paid the erroneous amount sued said caterer and won, the caterer will be making payments to the institution for the next 28 years.

Yup when you filed your returns ended up having to pay income tax on the initial 1.4m, and gift tax on amount you returned to your employer. Meanwhile your employer also got taxed both ways.

That was much better than I thought. I am more used to 0.025% that I now get on the money market account I have with my stock account and my checking with interest is not much different.

I've seen CDs with rates about that recently, be kinda hard to explain how I didn't know it was there, but I did invest it.

The problem there is they would definitely catch you (unless they were completely inept) before you earn the CD rate... You would most likely have a large penalty for early withdraw and may end up loosing money on the transaction..

I'm currently getting 1.05%[^]. The only gotchas are that the application process is unusually long because you have to sign up for (but are under no obligation to actually use) a free brokerage account; and have to deposit checks via mail (IIRC prepaid envelopes). On the plus side all atm fees are refunded at months end.

Yes. But before I returned it, I would spend all day marveling at my bank account online, and daydreaming what it would be like if I actually had that much money. Plus, I would have good karma for the rest of my life.

Have you ever heard the term "he dropped off the face of the earth". But then how long can you really live on that much money? Especially if you are moving around a lot to keep from being found. The reality is I would probably do the same. I wonder if you spent 10,000 and didn't have it to give back? Would they take that out of your paycheck for the next 10 years?
