Cyborg is closer to a human than an Android?

Your logic is strange to me; you have three new concepts, and none of the ones I had, so I don't see how that "should follow".

You're right. It doesn't (but IRobot is the interface of Robot, so it's only two new concepts) I plead intoxication  ;)

I ran across a couple of posts on CP today that requested new sections on robots and androids. Now, here's my question. What is the difference between an android and a robot?

There are only 10 types of people in this world — those who understand binary, and those who don't.

The word Robot comes from the Czech word 'Robota' which means Labor. Following the actual meaning of the term, a robot is nothing more than a machine specified to do actual physical labor work. An android comes from the Greek word 'Andros' which means 'Man'. Although the word 'Android' focuses in the Human nature and not the particular differences of the male and female gender, it's clear that it doesn't relate to a Robot since nothing in its definition implies that it performs any labor or even moves for that matter. Artists today create androids from scrap metal. In ancient times we could say that statues were androids made out of stone, marble, gold, ... etc.

That's unique to SA, no-one else calls them that. Freaked my dad out when we first moved to SA in 1980, he got pulled over by a traffic cop who said (after determining that my father spoke no Afrikaans) "Ekskuus me, sihrr. Does you knows you jest went froo a rrrred rrrrrobot?" "I beg your pardon" said Dad, "A what?" "A rrred rrrobot". Stunned silence from my dad, who looked around looking for some form of mechanical marvel, a fantastic metal beast painted in glorious red livery with a car shaped hole in. "I... uh... what?" "A traffis laaight!" "Oh!" says Dad, "You mean a traffic light..." Say Brady - stuur bietjie biltong china. Ons kry fokol hier :)

Trek die kant toe. It's colder, the food is bad and the people not nearly as friendly as "they" would have you believe but on the plus side you can earn a boatload of cash and travel extensively for relatively little. If you work in finance/banking (and you're good) you can earn close to ZAR1M p/a. Not a bad old life, I can tell you.

                        Consider this:

                        1. South African citizens need a work permit to work in Ireland.
                        2. South African citizens DO NOT need a visa to enter Ireland as a tourist and can stay here for up to 3 months sans permits, etc. Working is not allowed.

Although I'm skipping a number of details it would be entirely possible for you to apply to a few positions, lining up interviews over a 2 - 3 week period, fly out, do the interviews and discuss work permits with interested potential employers. It would, of course, be the decent thing to let them know that you'd need a work permit up front. My philosophy is that opportunities are made, not found. Good luck. http://www.irishjobs.ie/

There's lots of interfaces one can attribute to Android, to name a few: IAnimatable, IAsyncResult, IDictionary<Klingon>, IDropTarget, IExpando, IHttpHandler, IIntellisenseBuilder, ILease, IProcessHost, IResourceProvider, ... More advanced models might even add IGoogle, IReflect :)

From dictionary.com[^]: Main Entry: an·droid Pronunciation: 'an-"droid Function: adjective of the pelvis : having the angular form and narrow outlet typical of the human male Just ignore all those pesky alternate definitions, they're only there to confuse the matter. No clue why you would think it would have _any_thing to do with robots, however..... :)

A robot is a machine that performs tasks without human control/supervision. It may or may not have human form/shape. (see "HK") An android is a synthetic human ie made of flesh but manufactured to specification not cloned (see "Replicant"). A cyborg is a combination of both. (see "Terminator"). The word "robot" was invented by Karel Capek in his famous play RUR. This is confusing because the play is really about androids!!!
