Now bored with diablo 2 <> I'm looking for a game with more variety. Skulking round corners disguised as 'The Ethiopean' in Doom style games was fun, the hack and blast of Diablo was entertaining. and the gather up your forces and smite thine enemy of CIV style strategy games took the boredom away - but alas I am getting old - my reflexes are no longer what they were, my concentration is down the pan. What shall I do. I've been tempted by EverQuest but not sure whether to take the plunge - bandwidth not a problem as I might as well do other things with it rather than read the lounge and other (but not as interesting) bulletin boards and programming sites. So thoughts please on where this decrepit gamer can go.

If your reflexes are shot then I'd suggest a good RPG like the entire series of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. However, if you concentration is down the pan then these games are no good and I'd recommend a good shooter like Quake, Half-Life, or Unreal. This is a real paradox. I might suggest that you find MAME on the internet and download a bunch of old ROMs. You get tons of arcade action for free (however questionably illegally). And all of the games are amazingly easy. If you thought Pac-Man was hard 15 years ago, try it again and see how easy it is to beat. -- If it starts to make sense, you're in a cult.

Operation Flashpoint. The game's been out forever, and I've been playing it for well over a year with no sign of letting go. It's far from being "Quake with soldiers" (which is what, say, Battlefield 1942 is)--it can be downright slow-paced at some points, but that's because of the huge maps (which is pretty sweet upon itself; very few games have managed to do decent outdoors environments). The game requires more strategy than quick reflexes. And there's plenty of mods to keep the game alive for a good while still. It takes a while to learn (which is probably what put off a lot of people who were expecting to be able to get into a situation guns blazing, Quake-style), but IMHO it's *well* worth the effort. Ironically, it's the game that's made me swear off all other "blow sh*t up" type of games. I believe they're coming out with an all-in-one package including the original game and its two official expansion packs, so you might want to look for that one (if it's out already). The expansion packs are worth getting, so this package would be well worth it. http://www.flashpoint1985.com[^]

Yup, I've loved flashpoint since I got to play the first betas :-D (Though I tend to get stuck on the single player campaigns as they tend to get difficult way too quickly for me) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Ever played Abalone? You should. You can play it online too at http://uk.abalonegames.com/index.htm[^] But the online game cant replace the feeling of pushing the marbles around. :-D I keep submitting “VB” as a Priority-1 bug, but apparently no one here knows how to fix it. Nick Hodapp, Semicolon

How bout you take up reading? More entertaining than any game, in my opinion. If you like fantasy type games, then read The Sword of Shannara...its the best book in the world - ever. ;) -dork ps: I am making the jackass assumption that you dont read, so if you do, I apologize. I'm just not a big gamer. =)

I still meet some friends weekly online to play D2, but after 2+ years it is starting to get old. (still enjoyable though). Atually it's amazing that a game could hold my interest for over 2 years. Anyway, I've just started playing Neverwinter Nights. Alot more of a true roleplaying game than D2. I'm still just doing the solo adventure, but it looks to have some quite interesting possibilities with the online games. And the scenario editor looks to be truly intriguing, opening all sorts of possibilities. I'm looking for a good persistent world for it, I guess not unlike Everquest or Ultima Online. The new D&D rules seem pretty cool too (haven't actually played D&D in years). From the other post, I may have to check out Operation Flashpoint. Q. This space for rent.

brianwelsch wrote: check out Thomas Convenant (Stephan R. Donaldson) Yup, I'm still wondering if it is better than or just equal to the "Lord of the Rings". I mean, story is somewhat similar in means of the environment and races, but the main character is just the most lovely, torn, tortured soul ever. The "The Gap into..." series is just as nice too. It's at least LOTR. I definitely think I felt more for Thomas than I did for Frodo, the universe was more colorful also. Reviews: http://www.sffworld.com/authors/d/donaldson_stephen/reviews/chronicles.html[^] BW Bored people are boring for boredom shows a lack of inner resources - Amy Thompson

Anarchy Online[^] gives a 7 day trial (which seems a bit short to me, so I guess it'd only be worth using on a week that you really had nothing to do) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Now if you want a good long story The Wheel Of Time by Robert Jordan is a good bet, although he hasn't quite finished the series. The next book is out in the new year. Books come down to personal preference. Whats good for you/me may not suit someone else. Which is a shame as there are a lot of good stories out there.
