If you didn't get paid for it, would you still write code? [modified]

I don't get paid for it but I've coded quite a bit, currently spend about 10 hours per week. I consider it a hobby, Have a project I'm focused on, it's big it's bad, its ambitous, it will probably take me ten years to complete it :)

No. I can't really imagine anything I'd want to write code for that someone else has already done or is doing. I'm a maintenance programmer not a "developer" so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Being the only one to follow your instructions (so far): 4. I get ideas from time to time and get excited enough about them to put off other activities for a while. Not new algorithm ideas, just new applications, and just for a while, not for a long while.

As in, "I don't really have anythign to say, but I want to leave a smart-ass reply?" I actually considered making this an option ;)

Strangely enough I consider programming to be an outlet for my creative side. I never expected it to become a big part of my job. In fact, it isn't a requirement of my position, just a helpful tool. But my game programming now takes the place of what used to be candle making and plastic embedding.
I'm not a programmer but I play one at the office

Yes, I do. I get paid to write code at work. Then I go home, and I write code that I don't get paid for. Not the same stuff - work projects aren't interesting enough, at home I try out new things, or languages, and have occasional projects that I never finish. Often what I do at home leads into future work projects. I first started playing with WPF at home because I thought it was cool, then a project came along that was suited to what I'd learnt at home. If I wasn't a professional developer, I would still continue the home coding, but maybe I'd finished those projects once in a while.

Agreed!

The very first time I saw a calculator I desperately wanted one. But it was $50 and an impossibility. Same thing when I saw my first computer. A C= Pet in high school. I had NO idea even how to turn it on but I was gonna be DAMNED if I let any one else TOUCH it. I started programming in high school on that Pet during lunch. Eventually, saved enough for a Timex Sinclair ZX81 and learned it's basic and Z80. So I coded before I had a real job. And I'll keep coding after I retire. And in between, I can't find a job INTERESTING enough to save my life. So I code at home making pianocheater[^] It's my baby now that my kids are olden. Programming jobs have paid my mortgage pretty well. They may have been boring sometimes, but then, what job isn't?? So, umm, YES !!

I don't think so. If I could get to a point of being self sustaining, I would write code if it was for something worthwhile, like working on a website for a charity like World Vision. I would not do it for fun tho, I'd rather play guitar and work in the garden or kitchen.
Christian Graus Driven to the arms of OSX by Vista. Read my blog to find out how I've worked around bugs in Microsoft tools and frameworks.
I agree, only I would play the drums...

"5" if it is something fun. Latest DirectX-ish type of thing. Something that the world will never see or use. That is like reading a good book. "1" if it is another drudge thingy that many will use and none appreciate the value that they have received. One must be paid for that hurt. Oh, I am sooooo bitter!! :-D

Yes, if it served the purpose of solving a problem at home or for a friend.

5: I believe that is how I got started in programming in the first place. I was doing construction and writing software for my own amusement at night. Drove my wife nuts until she suggested I do it for a living. It appears that was good advice. Thanks Dear.

5 (Yes) if it was a hobby 1 (No) if it was to put money on somebody else's pocket.
