It's finally happened. CodeProject has become a victim of its own usefulness and popularity. We've been overrun by hordes of purile and moronic trolls. What's the point any more? Chris can't possibly hope to curtail the rampant misuse of the self-submitted article system, and moderating the lounge is opens up a legal can of worms where liability is concerned (on Chris' part). For my edification, what's the real problem here? - Is it that articles are being posted that you don't want to see? - Is the lounge getting to many programming questions? - what is specifically wrong with the self- submitted articles? - Are the forum questions not appropriate for your level (i.e. you being advanced and many of the people using this site are not? - Are to many people people submitting articles with the intention of selling their wares? Not being critical here, just trying to get a better understanding and narrow down the problem area (90% of the solution is understanding the problem).

Not being critical here, just trying to get a better understanding and narrow down the problem area (90% of the solution is understanding the problem).
My guess is, a little of each. As the traffic on CP increases, what were once occasional problems are now becoming more common... The occasional short article on a trivial topic can actually be useful; 5 poorly-written takes on a simple concept just confuse beginners and annoy veterans. Simple questions are fine, but once the ratio of advanced to simple is tipped too far by people unwilling to do any research on their own, the feeling that you're making a difference by taking the time to answer questions starts to dissipate (seriously, anyone visiting *this* site who doesn't know how to use MSDN should be slapped). One programming question in the wrong place once in a while can be ignored or flamed. 10 a week start to piss people off. People begging for "help" with their homework are *always* annoying.

It's just that time of year again. I kid you not - remember back to the start of Winter a year ago and we had the same crap for a short period. It will go away again, I always do--I meant it always does. My guess is that is comes with the new school terms - that would explain the influx in activty.

Seems a tad dramatic. I'm comparitively new here, but I'd say 70% of threads have some level of interest in them, which is pretty high for anywhere on the internet. The rest I just skip as soon as I see what they're about. Or maybe I'm just a moronic troll who finds interest in purile things. The more people that come in, the more there are to help people out when they run into problems and the more there are to write articles (which is what brings more people in than anything else). The only "problem" that needs resolving is the dubious and/or useless articles that get posted, diminishing the value of a strongly written article that someone has clearly spent time on. Remember that a lot of new people that come into this site find it by searching for a solution to a problem (in my case, it was how to upload a file to a database using ASP.NET) and thinking "well, how much more useful stuff can I find here?". If instead they find five answers to one question and they're all crap (10-lines of text and an attached example), they won't look around and Chris doesn't get his advertising money. I submitted my first article yesterday and I'm honestly surprised at the positive response I've had from it. I wouldn't have been offended if it had been sent back with suggestions for improvement and if it had been a subject already covered (although I had searched) then I would have expected it to be refused. There's a tricky line between being open and being flooded by dross. If you're not open enough then it stinks of elitism and people stop submitting. If you're too open then too many people post dross and the authors who spend days and weeks over their articles don't see any personal satisfaction in being published.
