This is just stupid. Regulations more often than not welcome any competition to a monopoly. Witness all the legal wrangling MS has had to deal with. On the other hand, how much money would it take to compete with Microsoft ? Is it even possible, on the OS front, in terms of the mainstream ? Many people have tried to compete with Coke/Pepsi and all have failed.

Christian Graus Driven to the arms of OSX by Vista. Read my blog to find out how I've worked around bugs in Microsoft tools and frameworks.

Close enough for practical purposes. Go program up a nice utility for Windows and make it popular. Then watch as the next version of Windows includes that functionality for "free".

You measure democracy by the freedom it gives its dissidents, not the freedom it gives its assimilated conformists.

Where do you think this "competition" is going to magically come from?

Businesses (or investors) looking for a profit see opportunity and think "Hey, we can make some money here. These bastards are charging too much for a crap product, we can do better." However if the regulatory environment is complex and/or rigged in the monopolies favor then the monopoly thrives.

You need to actually get out in the world and hold a real job and see what it takes to set up a major production facility. You're clueless as usual.

And what did you have to do with getting them rolling? I don't think pirating their software counts.

I guess that depends, in the first instance, on how many things you need and cannot source locally. Do you need them more than they need you ?

You could indeed put a tariff on some goods made in China, but what if they responded by placing tariffs on some of your important Chinese exports. You need to measure, as a country, not as "local community", what you might gain from what you might lose. And that could be a recipe for greater numbers of unemployed and added fiscal pressures on your nations' Treasury that could see a rate hike in taxes you pay.

I know that in Australia there is a thriving IT industry. I know you have recently sealed major industrial deals with China. But, are you are telling me that you have no mid to heavy industry at all? Or no manufacturing industry that is selling to the World? Unbelievable !!!!

If you look closely you'll see that China does in fact impose tariffs.

                          This statement is false
