Hi all, first: my sympathies to all those that are stuck in airports or have had to change their plans due to the volcanic eruption. There are two photos of the eruption that have circulated a lot in Iceland these last days. The first one is taken by the farmer who lives closest to the volcano: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31160820&id=1371165971[^] The second one is taken from an airplane and shows the three craters in the mountain. Lets just say they look.... devilish.... http://mbl.is/mm/frettir/innlent/2010/04/16/ofrynileg_asynd_eyjafjallajokuls/[^] (From an Icelandic news website). Of course there are a lot of volcanoes in Iceland, but the one erupting right now - Eyjafjallajökull[^] - has a "big sister" called Katla[^], both are under glaciers. Yup, the eruption we're having right now is a small one, compared to what will happen when Katla will erupt. There have been constant floods from the glacier for the last three days, but the floods from Katla are expected to be up to 1000 times larger than those we've had. The amount of ash is also expected to be significantly larger. And finally for the bad news: for the last millennium Eyjafjallajökull has erupted 4 times, and everytime Katla has followed. She's been dormant for quite a long time, so she is expected to be quite fierce this time. However, according to the seismic meters, there are as yet no signs that she is about to take off. I'm not sure if I should hope that she does or doesn't, the longer she'll wait probably means that the eruption will become larger as a consequence. Daníel EDIT: if you can't access the first picture, it can also be found here: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs45

That eruption photo is quite awesome. I'm kinda struck in awe that the 'small' volcano caused half of Europe to shut down air traffic. I wonder what'll happen when the 'big sis' burps. I hope nothing too bad for Iceland, it would be a shame if Katla would go all pompei on your behind. P.S. Why name one volcano Eyjafjallajökull and the other Katla? Why not just name the first one Eyjaf and be done with it?

The second pic looks like the Nazgûl from LOTR. The first is blocked at work (and so is the alternate link) :-|

Cheers, Vikram. (Got my troika of CCCs!)

Well, so far we've only had two casualities. The ash and the floods are not helping though. Actually, Katla is the name of the volcano, but the glacier on top of it is called Mýrdalsjökull. The volcano beneath Eyjafjallajökull is not big enough to have its own name, hence we use the name of the glacier instead.
