Well as DD (or maybe JSOP) would say "Go blow smoke rings out your ass!" :)

On a serious note, can you also do biological illustrations using the same software products? Example: http://www.nucleusinc.com/illustration.php?ill=protien&id=6[^] Or any of the awesome illustrations and animations on that site.

Yep you sure could. For things like organs, etc, I'd probably use ZBrush though, and since you don't need photo realistic rendering the ZBrush renderer is fine (and much faster). The renders I've got take about 5-7 minutes per frame. For the cellular things, where you have shapes that repeat, etc, then it might make sense to use Houdini and create special "assets" that you can link together in a more complex scene.

It's a Monday afternoon, here's a quickie distraction to help get through the day. Here's the (hopefully) final shots of the HMSS Invincible, Britain's premier war horse built in the dry docks in low Mars orbit. Next step is animation. Shot 1[^] Shot 2[^] Shot 3[^] Shot 5[^] Shot 6[^] Shot 7[^] A couple of shots that have been composited - the various layers of information in the render, the specular value, the diffuse values, special "light emitting" shaders, etc are composited in with the basic color pass of the render. For example compare shot 7 with this one: Shot 8[^] Shot 9[^] For a completely fascinating video on how the rendering is done check this out: Mantra Rendering[^

Volumetric effects have already been covered by SIGGRAPH. When I was doing my senior thesis, this[^] was one of the papers I ran across. Somebody else has posted their own thesis online which happens to include an attempt at volumetrics in Houdini: http://www.fps13.com/vfx/thesis/volumetrics.html[^] Oh, and fantastic job on the modeling and animation!
