Rave Parties [modified]

Hi fellow CPians, I as a big rave parties lover, would like to know what is it like around the world on this matter. Here in Brazil, in the region I live we usually have this kind of parties (open air) every month with about 10,000 people. With many DJs from around the world. I was wondering, how is it like where you guys live? Do they happen often? Do you like them? What do you think about the trance music? I love trance, I plan one day experience these kind of parties in other countries, I'd like to know how it is out there. Share your thoughts :-D [Edit:] It seems rave parties means lots of different things in many regions. This is how it is here (on the big parties, there are also smaller parties called PVTs, for friends and friends of friends): http://img.datatravel.com.br/galeriasV2/Operadoras/1/Pacotes/xxxperience.jpg[^]

You call them parties of peace, but that is only because of the large amounts of speedy love drugs that make everyone feel like they could stick a dick in a toaster and get off on it

Looks like fun. But, I've never cared for techno or trance so I don't think I've ever been to a rave.

I understand, I beleive its very different from here. Here they are usually done on the country, in fishing clubs or farms, with very wide area of green landscape. With a big stage and several tents. Check this out: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3555/3385257924_dbdcdebb36.jpg[^]
What you are describing sounds like what we (UK) call a Music Festival ( image )[^]. That one is a particularly large one. Over here 'Raves' are usually associated with illegal gatherings. Invading an empty warehouse or Farmers' field, weather permitting, without permission. Large quantities of drugs are consumed, some happy making and others as described elsewhere. Of course the Music Festivals have their share of illegal substances too, though far fewer of the nasty kind. If you ever get to the UK you should check out the dates of the Glastonbury Festival, the Reading Festival and the Isle of Wight Festival. I would recommend those although there are plenty of others.

I feel obligated to respond to this, as I'm throwing one of the damn things myself, during late September of this year, here in Phoenix/Metro Arizona, USA. Our little rave scene here certainly doesn't compare with those in Brazil, The Netherlands, Great Britain, or elsewhere in the world, but what we have is certainly relatively unique. We have raves here virtually every Friday and Saturday, typically ranging from a few hundred to (over) a few thousand people per party. Of course, our raves far extend from Trance; here, styles like Hardcore/Hardstyle, Electro House, Dubstep, and Happy Hardcore are equally as popular. We typically see mostly local and some national DJs at our parties, with the occasional international headliner. It's really unique... anyone interested in such things, if you pass through Arizona, make sure to check out one of our parties :)

It seems you've had a rather negative response to your question. I wanted to provide my more positive experience. I think in the UK, the word "rave" has become rather negatively associated with heavy drug use, but I don't think that is the reality. You might find that for UK readers, the term "music festival" has more positive associations. I'm a big fan of trance and techno music (artists like Paul Van Dyk[^], Sasha[^] and Paul Oakenfold[^] are some of my favourites - to give you an idea of the kind of music I'm talking about). Although I don't go to as many events as I used to a few years ago, I still try to go to something every now and again. In the UK, there are plenty of major trance/dance music festivals that are arranged annually. Creamfields[^], God's Kitchen - Global Gathering[^] and Gatecrasher[^] (although they don't seem to be doing one this year[^]) are some of the biggest, some spanning whole weekends with 50,000+ people each day. They all have major big name DJs as well as lots of more smaller niche artists. Usually they have several "arenas" playing slightly different styles so you pick what you like the most. The is generally a short 3 month summer "festival season" in which these all take place as weather in the UK is not often good enough for outdoor events, and even in the summer there are years when these can be very wet and muddy occasions. I've been to all 3 of these events in the past and can honestly say I've never had any trouble. The crowds are very friendly and I've never seen any fighting. I have on rare occasions seen a little drug taking, but perso

I've been to a few and loved 'em. I don't ever take drugs of any form except alcohol. Had an absolutely brilliant time. You have to keep your wits about you - but that's true of any large gathering, whether it be at a sports event, music festival, shopping centre (eg pickpockets). But provided you go knowing that there are small risks, and know what they are and how to avoid them, then you'll have an amazing time. To tar all such events as pure evil is nonsensical. Mike

Ah, the news. The medium that tells us the latest evil that is stalking our children, for the common good and not for sensationalism at all. I have no love of rave music, I think it is crap. I would not be seen dead at a rave party. I have no doubt that some people end up taking date rape drugs there ( how hard can it be to give drugs to someone in a scene where people take drugs ? ). But, I expect most people at rave parties like a certain type of music and enjoy interacting with their peers. I love heavy metal music. I don't doubt that, although I've never seen it, people have been raped or attacked at metal shows. Any subculture is still a part of society and has it's bad seeds.

Cool, Electro House is really nice. Be sure to checkout "felguk" @ universo paralelo on youtube. Two brazilian that rock on that. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to check that out.

Yeah, but on a music festival there is music, and on a rave, there are twelve elves forging rings or something else hammery.
