I'm a very big fan of VIM/GVIM and my .vimrc file has been quite heavily customized to suit my programming needs. However, there comes the time when you need a good IDE as much as the need for a lightweight [primarily] text editor.

    • Eclipse bites (sorry Rama, I tried the latest and it still sucks) YMMV.
    • Aptana is Eclipse in a banana skin (as opposed to a wolf in a sheep's skin...)
    • Netbeans 6.8 is actually quite decent, though, and this is by feel only with no concrete data, feels sluggish at times.
    • Geany is just a glorified text editor.
    • gedit/gPHPedit is not bad, VIM is better though.
    • I'm liking the beta of Jetbrains Webstorm[^]. Quite a nice IDE and so far my favorite on Linux (but its Java and platform independent but quite good actually)

If you can offer some more suggestions, I'd be very grateful.

If the post was helpful, please vote, eh! Current activities: Book: Devils by Fyodor Dostoyevsky Project: Hospital Automation, final stage Learning: Image analysis, LINQ Now and forever, defiant to the end. What is Multiple Sclerosis[^]?

I'm a fan of ActiveState Komodo. The full IDE costs money but there's a version called Komodo Edit which is free and has been more than sufficient for my needs.

Might be a dumb question but why can't you do your Linux development in Visual Studio?

For fear of misunderstanding the question, I'm giving you two answers. 1. My work is a combination of Javascript, Java, C++, Cython and PHP. Javascript is the only one that I know of that can be developed on VS. 2. VS doesn't run on Linux unless under a VM or WINE

Aptana was the only IDE for a long time where JavaScript Intellisense actually worked correctly. It can recognize Prototype, ExtJs and jQuery. I used Aptana on windows to some extent to write JavaScript code even though I had VS 2008.

Well, I'm not too sure about VS.PHP and I don't know of a single commercial grade application that's been written in Mono; till then its still amateur stuff as far as work is concerned. Cython is THE standard Python dialect :) Grasshopper. We tried it a few years back and it wasn't so hot. Frankly, cross compiling like that is akin to a cross-dresser, crossing back to "normal" by wearing their clothes backwards and upside down. Cannot be comfortable. I'd rather code it directly. But thanks in every case :)
