I actually downloaded it earlier and fired it up but still haven't put it through its paces. I'll do so tonight

If editors will suffice, take a look at UltraEdit for Linux[^].

I had that placed last because I'd have to pay for it. UE is possibly the best editor (after VIM) in existence. غير هيك , شو؟ وينك غاطس ما حدا شايفك؟ كيف أخبارك يا معلم؟ :)

For fear of misunderstanding the question, I'm giving you two answers. 1. My work is a combination of Javascript, Java, C++, Cython and PHP. Javascript is the only one that I know of that can be developed on VS. 2. VS doesn't run on Linux unless under a VM or WINE

I'm a very big fan of VIM/GVIM and my .vimrc file has been quite heavily customized to suit my programming needs. However, there comes the time when you need a good IDE as much as the need for a lightweight [primarily] text editor.

            • Eclipse bites (sorry Rama, I tried the latest and it still sucks) YMMV.
            • Aptana is Eclipse in a banana skin (as opposed to a wolf in a sheep's skin...)
            • Netbeans 6.8 is actually quite decent, though, and this is by feel only with no concrete data, feels sluggish at times.
            • Geany is just a glorified text editor.
            • gedit/gPHPedit is not bad, VIM is better though.
            • I'm liking the beta of Jetbrains Webstorm[^]. Quite a nice IDE and so far my favorite on Linux (but its Java and platform independent but quite good actually)

If you can offer some more suggestions, I'd be very grateful.

Well, I'm not too sure about VS.PHP and I don't know of a single commercial grade application that's been written in Mono; till then its still amateur stuff as far as work is concerned. Cython is THE standard Python dialect :) Grasshopper. We tried it a few years back and it wasn't so hot. Frankly, cross compiling like that is akin to a cross-dresser, crossing back to "normal" by wearing their clothes backwards and upside down. Cannot be comfortable. I'd rather code it directly. But thanks in every case :)

I agree, I still use Aptana today for (X)HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Once I get the UI laid out, I port it over to Visual Studio. Of course, the real power of Aptana does not come from Aptana itself, but the Zen Coding plug-in[^]. If you can find it for your IDE, not THAT is what I HIGHLY recommend...

Surprised that no one has mentioned Netbeans...

It was mentioned in the original post... but yes, netbeans is quite good and has improved by leaps and bound in recent iterations. For Java development Eclipse is still king, but you need to set aside half a day to get it set up. I use Netbeans for PHP and Javascript and it's usable right out of the box. (I have only run these two under Windows though so YMMV)

Oops, gotta learn to do that reading thing... Netbeans does keep improving though, 6.9 has some really nice features that I don't think are part of Eclipse (granted I abandoned Eclipse a long time ago, so they may be part of it now). I have used it in both environments and it does seem a little slower in linux than in Windows, but for the features, and the fact that I don't have to go spelunking for useful plugins to make it work... I am willing to put up with a little bit of slowness once in a while (I find this is usually because it is doing its initial scan of a project).

Don't do anything professionally with linux. At home I use Bluefish editor, and at times Screem too. Hate the latter tho.
