      I may have read it, but it's been a while since I came here regularly. UMBC stands for U Must Be Crazy, and I was. :)

        If not for Java development yes, it might.

        Aptana was the only IDE for a long time where JavaScript Intellisense actually worked correctly. It can recognize Prototype, ExtJs and jQuery. I used Aptana on windows to some extent to write JavaScript code even though I had VS 2008.

        I agree, I still use Aptana today for (X)HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Once I get the UI laid out, I port it over to Visual Studio. Of course, the real power of Aptana does not come from Aptana itself, but the Zen Coding plug-in[^]. If you can find it for your IDE, not THAT is what I HIGHLY recommend...

          I'm a very big fan of VIM/GVIM and my .vimrc file has been quite heavily customized to suit my programming needs. However, there comes the time when you need a good IDE as much as the need for a lightweight [primarily] text editor.

          • Eclipse bites (sorry Rama, I tried the latest and it still sucks) YMMV.
          • Aptana is Eclipse in a banana skin (as opposed to a wolf in a sheep's skin...)
          • Netbeans 6.8 is actually quite decent, though, and this is by feel only with no concrete data, feels sluggish at times.
          • Geany is just a glorified text editor.
          • gedit/gPHPedit is not bad, VIM is better though.
          • I'm liking the beta of Jetbrains Webstorm[^]. Quite a nice IDE and so far my favorite on Linux (but its Java and platform independent but quite good actually)

          If you can offer some more suggestions, I'd be very grateful.

            It was mentioned in the original post... but yes, netbeans is quite good and has improved by leaps and bound in recent iterations. For Java development Eclipse is still king, but you need to set aside half a day to get it set up. I use Netbeans for PHP and Javascript and it's usable right out of the box. (I have only run these two under Windows though so YMMV)

              Oops, gotta learn to do that reading thing... Netbeans does keep improving though, 6.9 has some really nice features that I don't think are part of Eclipse (granted I abandoned Eclipse a long time ago, so they may be part of it now). I have used it in both environments and it does seem a little slower in linux than in Windows, but for the features, and the fact that I don't have to go spelunking for useful plugins to make it work... I am willing to put up with a little bit of slowness once in a while (I find this is usually because it is doing its initial scan of a project).

                Don't do anything professionally with linux. At home I use Bluefish editor, and at times Screem too. Hate the latter tho.

                  I don't do much web development at all, so I just use (Aquamacs) Emacs with that thingy that lets you access files via SSH... tramp, I think it's called :) For bigger stuff, I would probably check out Netbeans too, since it's been surprisingly good as a Ruby IDE (coming from Eclipse for Java, which is fantastic but... monstrous in some ways). I believe you can also use Zen Coding[1][2] with Netbeans - it seems pretty astonishingly useful, if you haven't come across it yet! dude you must try QUANTA, that's the best web IDE for Linux. I've been using them all, but Quanta beats them all, even if it's totally old (KDE 4.3.2) cheers

                      For fear of misunderstanding the question, I'm giving you two answers. 1. My work is a combination of Javascript, Java, C++, Cython and PHP. Javascript is the only one that I know of that can be developed on VS. 2. VS doesn't run on Linux unless under a VM or WINE

                      AFAIK Visual Studio does support C/C++/Visual C+++/Visual C++.NET :)
