The article approval process should catch must of these types of articles. However, many such articles have been approved by sympathetic users teaming up just for the points and status

Point taken, but lets take a contrived example to explain my point a bit better: If I give every article a score from 1 to 10 based on how worthwhile it is, and I assume that longer more thought out articles score higher. If the approvals process gets rid of 3's and below, I* still only need to write a load of 4's, rather then the 10's I* might otherwise have written? *figure of speech - not me personally.

All the non niche stuff I'm interested in has already been covered to the point that it makes my eyes bleed if I try to write anything about it. So because I'm only going to publish stuff people will not look for very often, I don't assume I will get many up votes.

I see, so are you suggesting a "geek multiplier" for more boring specialised articles? :-D I feel your pain, but there is a limit to what CP can do... For example: My articles had tons of images & are a bitch to upload, should I be asking for points for each image I upload?

Your theories are flawed. The approval process is binary, approved or not approved, it doesn't matter what score the article receives. After the article gets approved any votes applied prior to that are cleared. The length of the article has nothing to do with the quality either. There have been some long-winded attempts that have been basically useless. You are seriously giving the impression you are only after points and reputation. As the saying goes, respect must be earned, not demanded.

Finally submitted my first article. Just 100 more to go 'til legend status (give or take). Does anybody else think that having such a high points requirement (even for silver) encourages shorter, less complicated articles? Chris

It shouldn't, but the new points system makes it matter.

Fair enough I guess. Personally, I prefer articles with some substance to them - just opinion though.

Not my intention at all - reputation here makes no difference to me at all and why should it... In fact, thats kinda my point: IMO any reputation/points system encourages people to try to game the system to get more points (programmers doubly so.) Surely people should be contributing for the sake of contributing, rather then for points? I can't remember the name, but there is a theory that says that any sort of reward system is ultimately a de-motivator. Obviously my posts are coming across as inflammatory, and that's not what I want to achieve here - mostly I just wondered what people think of the new system.

Only if it gets approved :-) Seriously though, I don't expect I will ever even get to Silver. It's nice to contribute and all, but I don't need "reputation".

"Legend" status has been deprecated and should no longer be used in day-to-day conversation (unless tyou're referring to me, of course). Short articles tend to get ravaged (low votes) by the users. This can completely negate the points you received for posting the article, and indeed, even result in a negative net balance. So, you should avoid writing anything you deem on your own to be sub-standard.

Absolutely not. You are born with a certain number of man points - even women (and Indians) are. They can be added and (more often than not) deducted. Little girls loose almost all their man-points when they realize they always have to sit to go to the bathrood, and/or hold their first tea party, or purpossely don their first pink piece of clothing. They can gain them back by working on cars, riding motorcycles, or taking on a job normally filled by males, but because they're women, they lose them faster than they gain them.

See, that's what loses you man points. When you describe something as "pure" without attaching a word like "evil", you could be talking about bath soap for all we know.

I've got 6 articles & almost 4000 points. So your logic is flawed!

Six articles = 600 points. The rest of your author points are gained by votes, blog entries/votes, tips/votes, etc...

I'm awarding you a negative man point for knowing what bath soap is. And one less for myself by proxy.

I hadn't even thought of that. Are they similar to man points? Images must be a pain - my content was pure text and that was bad enough!

Finally submitted my first article. Just 100 more to go 'til legend status (give or take). Does anybody else think that having such a high points requirement (even for silver) encourages shorter, less complicated articles? Chris

Actually 48 or 49 seems to be the lower end of the Legend status.

:omg: I don't think I would ever get that far even if I did have low standards.
