A friend of mine said recently that he was thinking about buying an iBook. I got kinda curious, so I went to www.apple.com to checkout their prices/features. I don't know how Apple survives. The iBook laptops all have 12" screens, until you get into the $1799 price range (you can replace the DVD drive with a CD-ROM and get it for $1650). I compared it to a laptop at www.bestbuy.com

    Sony VAIO iBook

    AMD Athlon G3
1.53 Ghz 700 Mhz (note: Mhz aren't comparible across machines)
15" XGA display 14.1" XGA display
    256MB DDR SDRAM 256MB SDRAM
    30.0GB HD 30.0GB HD
    nVidia GeForce4 32MB ATI Mobility RADEON 16MB
    DVD-ROM/CD-RW DVD-ROM/CD-RW

    $1499 $1799

Apparently they are really great for graphics / architectural work. Despite this loyal market, what really surprises me about Apple is the developer group. I can't really imgagine deciding to leave MS development to go for Apple. But maybe that's just because I have had no exposure to Apple development. Does anyone here know if it's a pleasure or not? Perhaps it's just really well paid. It should be considering the price tag on the pc's. :~

I've always heard that there was an idea behind Win ME... I still can't figure out what that was... anyboy know??? I;ve herad the idea was that it was supposed to be n operating system but I doubt this. - Brian Delahunty

That's what they say. However, our graphics department begs to differ. :P -- If it starts to make sense, you're in a cult.

Perhaps it's just really well paid. It should be considering the price tag on the pc's. Of course, you get to spread the development costs over more users on Windows than on an Apple. (There's probably 10 windows users per mac user.) So, you can write a Windows app for 10 windows users for $10/user and make $100. You have to sell an app to 1 apple user for $100/user to make the same $100. ------------------------------------------ "Isn't it funny how people say they'll never grow up to be their parents, then one day they look in the mirror and they're moving aircraft carriers into the Gulf region?" - The Onion

Precisly what I thought. It would be really interesting to spend a day with an Apple developer, see what the tools are like, etc. I wonder what keeps them going.

Eh... if your friend only uses Apples then isn't it going to be hard to compare them to others as regards user-friendliness... He/she would have to spend time using the other systmes inorder to make a decision IMO. I do like Apples and they are very user friendly but I still won't be hanging up my two button mouse for a while!!! :-) Regards, Brian Dela :-)

I personally haven't developed for the Mac but a few of my mates have and they say it's fine. Have a look at http://developer.apple.com/macos/macoverview/[^].. It's a very good intro to programming for Mac's. :-D Regards, Brian Dela :-)

Megan Forbes wrote: It would be really interesting to spend a day with an Apple developer I totally agree. What is coding for a Mac like? What are the APIs, etc. ? If the users of Macs are generally more artistic (graphics, music, etc), are the developers like that too? I don't know anyone who has a Mac, so I play with the ones in a local computer shop when I am there, but it's not the same as actually using one to do work.

We did some work on OS X not long ago. It was fun simply because it was new to me... The API's tended to be cleaner and/or more organized than I found win32 to be, but by no means would I ever give up Windows/Linux.... but I did buy a powerbook...

( Yes, I noted that in my original post. ) And if you apply your above rules to your situation why aren't you using Linux? Windows is bloody expensive, Linux is cheap! Yes and no. I don't feel like fighting with Linux, want to run most of the software on the market, and need to learn/know windows programming for my marketability in the job market. But, yes, I also have used PCs for a long, long time and find them easier to use than Linux (which a Mac user might say about a PC). ------------------------------------------ "Isn't it funny how people say they'll never grow up to be their parents, then one day they look in the mirror and they're moving aircraft carriers into the Gulf region?" - The Onion
