Just as it releases a fix for one flaw, reports[^] are coming out about older versions of the phone dropping more calls following another fix.

Am I right in thinking that, rather than improving the signal quality, the "fix" they've issued simply makes the signal meter display fewer bars (which is correct but hardly helps people trying to make calls)?

That's correct. The bug they had was to do with displaying more bars than warranted by the signal strength.

They probably have something in thier software that says "when signal bars = 0, drop the call"....so fixing the bug in number of bars displayed = more dropped calls.

The more I read of this the more I am glad my last upgrade was to a Blackberry Storm 2.[^]

Seriously, the iPhone debacle isn't Apple's fault. Consumers I have wanted everything from a device except for calls, signal, and call quality, that it is any wonder it took so long. If a company made a solid phone with great reception and excellent call quality no one would buy it because they need mp3 ring tones, or need twitter, or have to have face book, no wait, "Can I get any apps?", "Does it have GPS?", "Can I track my child's every move with this?" Bottom line, and Apple knows this, there aren't enough people in line to buy a phone to matter.

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. A man said to the universe: "Sir I exist!" "However," replied the universe, "The fact has not created in me

I had a great phone once. All it did was help me make phone calls. There was no camera, no web access, the screen was black and white. The battery lasted ages and the reception was great.

I remember the good old days when phones were tied to walls so you never lost them. The buses weren't full of loud people. You could go home at the weekend and work wouldn't call you. There was the option of going off the grid. People had to get up and piss off into the hall to have a conversation and thus not spoil your enjoyment of the TV.

That one fucks me off more than any other: why do people feel it's alright to talk loudly to each other or on the phone whilst I'm trying to watch something? Why can't they piss off outside? And if I have the temerity to say something they make out like I'm mad. Now I just turn the sound up to full volume: they soon get the message.

This happens anyway without mobile phones. I call it my mother in law.

That's exactly what they did, anandtech[^] has an article with good graphics to show what changed and how it stacks up with bars on an android device.
