When you code in MASM, you take those 50 lines and shuffle them around to avoid pipeline stalls, and change some instructions to a shorter form but longer execution time to keep loops in 16 bytes or less, then time the result, then do it again, and again... Dave.

When you code in MASM, you take those 50 lines and shuffle them around to avoid pipeline stalls, and change some instructions to a shorter form but longer execution time to keep loops in 16 bytes or less, then time the result, then do it again, and again... Dave.
FYI, these days (Core2) it is OK to fill up to 4 blocks of 16 bytes of code, as long as they are all properly aligned and the total number of instructions across those 4 blocks does not exceed 18. They do not even have to be consecutive. The Core i7 is even better in this regard, and fits 28 instructions or 8 blocks of 32 bytes in its loop buffer. (source: Agner Fog's manuals)
